Default UK poster getting a 928 on the road after 15 years

hi there

are there many other uk posters on here? ive recently taken on the task of getting an 83 4.7 16v kjet car back on the road after 15 years sat up.

at the moment im really looking for pointers on where to get parts without having to pay the earth. current expensive parts to get are a radiator and the cambelt tensioner.

so far it has the rad out (oil cooler leaking into the water) and the engine is stripped back to get the cambelt off. still a lot of work to do

any tips on how to recon or replace the tensioner would be good

i need to replace the rad. an OE item is looking to cost £700-£1000, so i want to go for a custom alloy item off ebay. wondered if anyone here had any tips?

Welcome to the 928 world

There are a couple of independant 928 specialists in the UK;

Paul Anderson - http://www.nixsoft-consulting.co.uk/928spares/ You need to call him on a phone with caller ID enabled, he won't answer otherwise.

Chris Saunderson - http://www.loebankmotors.co.uk/

Both are highly recommnedend and known to the UK 928 community. There is also a good supply of parts on eBay. With a car that's been out of use for so long, you could consider buying a compplete non running 928 as there's likely to be a lot of parts that need work/replacement on yours and this will be cheaper than buying the parts individually.

I'd also recommend you join the mail list on 928.org.uk - good way to get involved in the UK community and hopefully you'll find some owners local to you.

Hi Matt

Other possibilities for spares in the UK are EuroCarParts and Berlyn Services, however I would seriously consider talking to www.928sRus.com, www.928Intl.com, and www.928gt.com although they're in the US all have dealt with many UK customers before so know the ins and outs. despite the distance and shipping charges involved 90% of the time there are significant savings to be had over the best UK pricing. Plus you are getting a 928 specific service - these guys actually know a lot (or more) about 928s and what they are selling - so you stand more chance of actually getting the right part. Just make sure you tell them you have a RHD 928 as some parts are RHD specific. Phoning them to confirm an emailed or faxed order helps also.

As Lost in Space points out - join the 928UK email list - local help is always good.

What is wrong with the tensioner - they don't usually "break" - a replacement seal for the top and O ring inside ( a few quid) with a good clean out and a new gasket is normally all that is required. If the tensioner roller has any lateral or radial play replace it - the roller with bearing is about £50. IIRC a complete new tensioner assembly is in the hundreds if available. or you could try the porkensioner (search this forum for more info) from Roger at 928sRus

+1 on calling roger and getting a Porkensioner. Don't worry that he's along way away from you and me... he still gets parts here fast.

As far as the radiator... if your core is good, I have a radiator with 2 good oil cooler end tanks that you're more than welcome to. If your core isn't good, I has a quote for recoring this one for £250, which is still cheaper than a new one over here.

I decided to go down the route of getting an alloy one from the US. The only killer is the import duty!

Hi Matt

I hope you know you are taking on a Herculean and expensive task here! You could end up spending £30k - £40k easy*.

I am restoring an 84' S2 and have already spent £10k+ on the wheels, brakes & Suspension - & I haven't even started on the engine yet.

Although second hand parts are widely available and relatively cheap I would recommend that you import them from the states as you will find they are of superior quality due to their climate. The only drawback being the dreaded import TAX.

I have found http://www.mailordercentral.com/928intl/departments.asp to be the best.

thanks for your tips, i need to learn some terminology, ive only been lurking here for a couple days.

im about to place the order for the cambelt and tensioner this afternoon.

thanks for your input fellas. i need to brush up on some of the terminology.

im not planning on concourse or a factory fresh rebuild from the ground up. i want something robust and very usable. i run an oldish golf which i can rely on to the end of the world and back after 205k miles, its going to Le Mans in the next couple weeks. next year i want to take the porsche

anyway. i just ordered the following

Full Service Kit for S/S2/S4 Round Tooth - includes cam belt, cam belt tensioner & cam belt idler roller £175.95

allegedly all porsche items in porsche boxes..

then i can put the front of the engine back together and stop up to the cooling. i want to overcome all cooling issues, so i think ill take the big radiator route with separate oil cooler. sack the spider fan and put a big electric item in.

anyone got any comments on that? the big rad is a universal item off ebay with basically the same dimensions.

after that i need to tackle the kjet. its all old school golf technology so ill be pretty at home with that.

Hi Ben,

Please could you post to this board some of the pics/links you flagged up on UK list? I'm sure many members here would be amazed to see them. I was shocked by the standard of restoration.

basically, im aiming to have a concourse car or a factory fresh rebuild. im aiming for something robust, unquestionably reliable, something that i can dish out a thrashing to without it batting an eye lid. ive got an old golf gti at the moment on 205k miles which is what the benchmark is in terms of reliability. i take that thing everywhere, thrash it whenever i can and it never misses a beat (main difference is golf parts seem to cost less than half that of porsche bits!)

who are good suppliers of porsche bits?
i have accounts with eurocarparts, GSF and i just bought my first bits from www.porscheshop (cambelt, tensioner, idler, gaskets, stat)

once thats done ill source a big universal ally rad from ebay and make the cooling system bullet proof

Roger at 928sRus in Texas (who is ex-UK himself) has direct distribution of official Porsche parts, other very good direct OEM parts, plus many specially upgraded parts that engineers on this list have created. (such as the audi-derived spring tensioner that upgrades the original tensioner)

BTW, did you buy the seal that goes into the block, way behind the stat, as well as the stat and its contact seal?

What do you intend to do for motor mounts? No way I'd buy Porsche parts on this. $70 US for a pair of solid rubber equivalents.

Also, you will probably need to replace fuel lines immediately (don't delay this, else be sure to wear lots of Nomex).

Matt82 - I believe you have to have a paid membership in order to upload pics and such. Membership is not expensive but the benfits are well worth it.

I am not a moderator - just a recent new member. I experienced the same with pics I wanted to upload.
