928 Wrist watches

I don't think you'll have trouble selling 100. James and I account for two of them and take the rest to OCIC, Sharks in Hell, Sharktoberfest and SITM '10 if there's any left. They will go quick. BTW James, will they be serialized? I know it's an exhibition back, but I'd even pay a little extra for something along the side of the case like '928SE No. 1 of 100'

Charley,
You are right... I couldn't remember what that middle number was it is in fact $375, not $475...
We shall see...this is something that has NEVER BEEN BEFORE and may never be again (though I suspect if it is a success there could be future, new styles of 928 watch)... I would hope that most 928 fans would suck it up for $500 and join in but I know this is a tough time for many (me included, I have been out of work since Dec), but you know somethings and sometimes you just have to say WTF!
Mark I believe they will be numbered 001-150 (as 150 is the target purchase right now)... I will be sure of it as that is no big deal right there, so I would say yes, expect to have a specific watch # that is YOURS!

Bill, I hope you are right. I can tell you the standard watch from this German company is pretty awesome. I have one with a black band and chrono and one with a brown band and no chrono and they are my GO TO watches because the look SO RIGHT! This watch will be even BETTER, so I think this could be a seriously awesome buy for folks and a seriously awesome watch to be VERY proud to wear and show off!

RKD- I don't have the photoshop skills you have... so I did this the old fashioned way -with MS Paint. It is extremely pixelized, but you get the idea.
James- I thought some of the fans of high-end watches would appreciate what appears to be an additional complication -a seconds subdial with the look of a bezeled gauge. Also, to keep some symmetry I changed the hour markers to the same length as the minute markers -only about 3 times the thickness (remember some watches like Movado have no markers and you can still tell the time). A larger crown gives a better overall 'feel' to the watch and the overall design gives a classy, yet quite a sports-car flair. I also added a rear spoiler to the 928 silhouette! There is plenty of room between the 6 & 8 position to place the "Made In Germany" tagline.
You may find it interesting to know... the original watch is styled after an almost identical pilots watch in the same stark black & white only it came in a 52mm diameter case. It was quite popular with the German fighter & bomber pilots of WWII. Many companies are reproducing almost exact duplicates in smaller sizes these days. Only brands like IWC and other Swiss companies are considered the 'high-end' versions of this timepiece.

Barry, I was trying to make the hour/minute marks look like the dash tach and speedo so the watch would match the car more closely. I assume the movement James had picked was a center second hand and any other movement would be less desirable or more costly so I reigned in my desire to make a chronometer instead of a watch. Being a GTS owner and feeling a little left out on the "!", I do like the spoiler addition to the silhouette.

A sub seconds dial would require a different movement, not simply a chrono addition. And please don't add that spoiler...those of us with the far superior 'S' spoiler might object. BTW James, did you ever mention what the original watch is? I have an idea, but I'd like to know even if you PM me, I won't tell.

RKD: Yes, the dial should mimic the tachometer... so the hour markers all need to be the same length -it looks odd to have the 9-2-8 markers be shorter than the rest. The "!" probably applies to about 95% of the 928s produced, so even though a GTS doesn't have it -all 928 owners still know what it is. And yes, the movement would be differerent to have a sub seconds dial but in reality, a seconds hand isn't really necessary (Movado).
Mark: I thought the addition of the spoiler would further identify the silhouette as a 928... versus the 911 silhouette used by PAG on the varsity jackets. Without it, they are just too similar. BTW, neither of the factory spoilers perform the way they should... they are too short and too narrow to effectively engage the slipstream of air going over/around the car (just a personal gripe -look at wind tunnel photos).
I have found several pics of the originals and the repros of the watch in question and will try to post them all with the company name and size...

The original pilot's watches were made by only 5 companies: IWC, A. Lange & Sohne, Laco, Wempe, & Stowa. All 5 are still in business!
This one is an original Wempe (Alpina movement) in 55mm! It is huge.

Here are some of the modern creations in the same style... by Laco (42mm front & back -check out the 'timing belt' air ventilation strap!), Steinhart (44mm), & Debaufre (44mm & Limited Edition of 200 in 48mm):
