OK, I will guess again. Is the car in the Porsche Museum storage facility?

No. At least it wasn't shown the first time they open it to the media.
(we thought it was there too)

Ding! Yes it is there, but not being displayed obviously.

A few years ago I talked with Klaus Bischoff who was the head of the Porsche Museum at that time who confirmed they had the Brumos race car and he sent some pictures of it in storage. He said it was without an engine and the pictures showed a packing crate in place of a race seat.

We had contacted Pete Stout of Excellence Magazine and forwarded him pictures of the "found" Brumos 928 since an article in Excellence Magazine on the Brumos 928 listed it as missing and possibly destroyed since the writer had also interviewed Mr Snodgrass. At the time of our contact Mr. Stout seemed interested in doing a follow up story about it being found, but unfortunately it hasn't been done and it has been a few years now.

The original Excellence article also questioned if the Brumos 928 was an all aluminum chassis since two had been made by an aluminum company as a promotion of their abilities with aluminum work. I personally doubt it, but it can be easily checked if one get get to it with a magnet.

I also tried to arrange to get this 928 back to Brumos in Florida to get refurbished, but Mr. Bischoff said Porsche wanted to keep it in house and do it themselves. I guess they will get to it someday.

And now more pictures to enjoy.

All that is needed is quick look underneath. Alu bodies had totally different suspension than normal steel body setup.

The accolades of your 928 brethren!

Funny that this historic 928 and of it's existence is not that noteworthy to others on this forum.

This is one of the most significant 928s and was, for awhile anyway, the 'Holy Grail" of 928 race history.

So is there anyone in Europe who would like to carry the baton further and bug the Porsche Museum staff to get it out of mothballs and display it out in public? Arqdiogo?

Would love it if they left it mostly original as it is now and not do a "ground up" restoration on it.

Heck, I would volunteer to help clean it up for free if they flew me out there...

P.S. Another very significant 928, the "Land Speed Record 928" is now thankfully being restored by none other than Ed "Obehave" on this forum. This restoration is not for the faint of heart since it had been raced for years in California and ultimately suffered a crash that totaled it out of racing. It is up to us 928ers to preserve these historic 928s and give them significance for other future 928ers to enjoy.

This is the most significant 928 Racer because it is the only one who came from the motorsport department...
I agree completely with you - It´s the Holy grail!!!

(Another 928 S raced in Le Mans but by private hands and without any race preparation - and because of that, with very modest results.

In England, A porsche dealer (AFN) raced another 928 S, in germany we had the "prosurfer" car (nice one, too) and that was it.)

This Brumos 928 raced (I'm not sure of that because of the normal "wheels" in 83) in Germany by Gunther Steckkonig and with overall victories, but in "brumos mode" it was a real and full racecar.

When the "new" Porsche museum was opened, I was there and asked the staff about this car - The answer was: "Sorry??? What car?"

A close friend of mine (journalist) was there when they showed the "Storage of the Museum". Asked for the "brumos 928" and no one seemed to know about the car too...

Thats why I asked yesterday for your help. I Thought it was still in the U.S...

Next time in the museum I´ll ask again for it! But this time, I´ll bring the photos you've posted here!

Thanks for your posts!

Hi Arqdiogo,

It would also help to throw out the name of Klaus Bischoff if the museum curators are still suffering amnesia when you ask for the Brumos 928 again.

Good luck and please keep us posted on your endeavors to get it out of their back room.

Cheers,

"Derek '86.5" aka "the Dude" had an uncle who was the owner of Style Auto and sponsor of that car. He may have more pics and info.

This is some good stuff. To know a racing version with factory involvement is out there. We love the 928 but have really no knowledge of period efforts from factory or semi-works support of a racing 928.

It would be great if Derek could ask his uncle about how he got involved with the project and what other anecdotes his uncle remembers about this affair. That his uncle agreed to sponsor a 928 in this very famous race is very interesting since even Porsche didn't give it much thought, at least in the beginning.

According to the late Bob Snodgrass, it was only after the Porsche factory 962s had mechanical issues and were pulled from the race did the Porsche factory reps start paying attention that the 928 climbed from last position (74th IIRC) at the start (it was granted a special pass by the race officials to even start) to 14th overall and 4th in class! They approached Bob Snodgrass and asked if it were possible to "podium" the 928. Unfortunately Bob Snodgrass was running a conservative race with the 928 (although some of the drivers told me they didn't know they were to do so!) to make sure it finished and the time gap was too great within the time left in the race.

Once Derek gets his uncle's information, he can post it on this thread for others to read.

Default Update on the Trigema - Brumos Porsche 928

The Trigema - Brumos Porsche 928 has been fully restored and was displayed with several other Porsche race cars on April 21, 2017 at the Porsche Museum.

I attended the Porsche 928 Club Germany 40th anniversary event which included the museum tour and was pleased to see that the Porsche 928 was given a prominent position in the display.

Later that evening at the banquet dinner, Günther Steckkönig and Hans Clausecker, the drivers who initially drove the car to glory in the Nürburgring VLN races, discussed how all this happened, their impression of the car, and the much later restoration.

I wrote a recap of the event, it is currently linked on the home page of the 928 Owners Club.
