HVAC console air vent - dual level actuator...?
I have acquired a spare console for some redesign mock ups I am doing...
After a while I noticed that this console has a dual level vacuum actuated air flap valve in the console vent - the manually controlled vent portions are missing so I'm not sure what the mechanism there was - I assume based on the configuration that a manual control could also operate the same flap valve - somehow...?
On my GTS this is a manual only air valve.
This vacuum actuator has 2 vacuum ports - one that operates the flap to approx 50% the other activates it to 100% open... in the manuals I only see a single valve there...and provision for only a single control solenoid ..
Anyone know more on this configuration... year??
Also how was it used? - esp. in conjunction with manual control? and how was the second vacuum port controlled?

Well maybe its as easy to reference the WSM's page 87/87 - its item #12 in the diagram.
Since you asked for the Photo - here are some...
This console has the rectangular style clock - so its not really early. In the vent slot there is a microswitch on the bottom right - it is not contacted by the flap so I assume was activated by the lever on the manual adjuster?

Alan does this look like an original vacuum pod installation?
I have never seen this.
I have only seen the finger controlled slide switch on the right side of the vents

This is just like my 81 and my son's 82. Dual vacuum pod and micro switch. The dual vacuum was an attempt to better regulate air through the center vent. With the manual vent ****/lever in the down position the flap closes.

I removed an 82 console and it looked like the later style .
So they must have changed it mid year or so.
thanks for the great info

The lever for vent #4 on wsm 87-87 contacts the microswitch. Solenoid c orange vacuum hose and solenoid d brown vacuum hose control comb flap operation, wsm 87-44.

Paul - thanks...
WSM 87-44 and 87-84 (et al) seem strangely similar...
I think in this case there is no comb flap as on the later models - just a 2 level center vent flow control.
From the wiring diagrams it seems the lever operating the switch cuts off all flow when in the off position & when its open it allows full flow or ~50% flow depending only on the controller - but probably based on the other flow flap selections... I think this is actually a better idea than the manual only vent on the later systems.
Ideally I'd actually like to have a 3 way switch for this operation: closed (no flow) automatic(programmed flow), open (overide full-flow except in DEF)....
Humm... maybe an early '78/'79 vent with the **** on the left and a 3 way switch installed instead... I think these are fine because - the left most part of my vent is less than useless anyway because it just bounces air off the side of the pod and creates turbulence...
I just located a good looking one on ebay... anyone have a **** for an early vent? (or at least a picture of one... is it the same as the blower ****?)

Changed in 82 IIRC and the double actuator is NLA and I have not been able to find diaphragms to fit it.

Roger - well its good that the diaphragms in this actuator are both still good... for now...
My GTS does still have the hole for this actuator, but it has a quite different microswitch location (actuated by the flap directly) - but it does have the same style manual lever mounting point on the right side...
