Default Back Widow's blown #6 rod bearing :>(

Here it is...the damage is official.....Black Widows engine is OUT and the news is in and NOT GOOD....

#6 rod bearing was down to copper quite a bit....#2 was worn, but still "silver"....the REALLY bad news is the crank is worn down-scarred pretty bad on #6....a quick check with a dial caliper (not accurate enough) revealed it is slightly under spec (min spec is like 51.971 to 51.990)....#2 was fine at 51.980....so is the crank a goner.....I don't know.....maybe some +1 tolerance rod bearings will work, once the crank is down to a uniform size?

Anyone have a good crank for sale cheap?

More bad news....my "new" clutch sure looks SMOKED for being a grand total of 1000 miles old or so.... so a new one is in the works (great more $$$$$)....

Enough talk, heres the pics and time for me to

Hmm lets see how I'll tell the wife....."honey the race car, which you HATE with a passion I've never seen & yes you told me NOT to buy, is broken (shocker I know) & it will cost thousands of $$$ to fix it....................pause why I recover from groin kick............yes dear I will "try" to sell sharky....

Sorry to hear that Brian. Hopefully the guys at EGR can get it fixed up good as new without it resulting in a divorce!

You've seriously got me worrying about my engine now so I'll be cutting open my filter this weekend and taking a good look at it and am seriously thinking about an Accusump before I start to modify my suspension or tires. Hopefully this painful lesson for you can save some others from having to learn the hard way.

Keep us up to date with what's going on!

The truely sad (or stupid from my perspective) part is I KNEW about rod bearing failure in 928's.....especially at Thunderhill with the hard left hand sweeper at high G....but I thought my rpms were low "enough" and I might get lucky......turns out I was WRONG....

I should have checked the rod bearings BEFORE I drove the car...but I got caught up in the excitment and now have to pay the price...

I have no doubts I can get the widow back on track fairly soon.....its just the $$$$ + the wife I'm worried about...

OH S&*T!

Take some time and consider various options. Have you considered suing Amsoil? Kibort, their local rep, says this can't happen.

Yes, that retainer clip is stock.

That isnt good to see!

Maybe see about just polishing up that crank and running either oversized or slightly larger tolerances on that bearing group.

That's most unfortunate Brian. Sorry to see that. At least you caught it before you damaged the block/heads/etc.

This kit looks very good for the money while yyou're in there.

I've learned about oiling the hard way too - in fact so hard it took me two times before it sank in

I don't talk about the racecar with my wife anymore..........

I think its safe to say that in a little more track time I would have the "ventilated" engine block...so I guess I'm lukcy I caught it when I did...

It also appears that this 20 year old motor has NEVER been opened...so that rod bearing is the original 94K mile old one too....

Lizard
I also hope some crank polishing and an oversize rod bearing is the answer...I hoping I don't have to pull the crank-lower block girdle...as that increases labor quite a bit...... If I have to pull the crank, but can save it...I'll have it drilled to increase oiling....if the crank is a goner.....then I don't know what I'll do....

I think that will work on that journal, it looks like it can be saved.

Brian-

Sorry to hear about the engine! If the crank polishing doesn't work out, I've got the crank from my 91GT motor that Abby has first right of refusal on right now, but if he passes I'd sell it for $500. This of course, contingent on my making sure it mics 'in spec'. I'd also be happy to ferry it up to Taylor machine and back if you want to get it drilled ....

You probably need to check the big end of the rod for roundness also.

this might work.....I should know for sure the status of my crank in a couple days....."if" its a goner then that sounds like a good deal!

If the engine is out..just pull the crank. I'm sure someone has a 5 liter crank sitting around out there. Get it drilled, and new bearings... Think through your oiling issues before you just slap it all back together. Easier to do it now that the engine is out....

Whatever you decide..good luck...I'm going to have to go there soon..as I've got big sticky rubber on my track car now..and it's a long fast run into turn 1 and hard left turn 2 at Spokane. For now I'll just short shift like Kibort to save my motor..but when I hit the SCCA circuit, I won't be concentrating on the oil pressure
