Default 928 vs BMW 8 series

Great to be part of what appears to be a great group (I've been sitting on the fence). Will be posting pics of my 87 5-spd when it's out of the shop. The question is are the cars comparable (prices are)?

The prices for the non CSI 8 series is comparable with 928's....however they are quite a bit different in performance....the 8 series is much more of a luxury coupe, vs the far more sporty 928.....

A good comparo would be the 850 CSi and GTS....those two are very similar....both in performance and value too...since 850CSI's are pricey!

Having owned an e46M3, I considered going for a 850 or 840 when I decided I wanted an older high end sports coupe.

Then I sat in one, drove it, and found out what it weighed.

You think the 928 is a little portly in stock form? Try 4000+ pounds of german cruiser behind a smaller motor (840i) or almost 4400 pounds for the rare/expensive/horrifically-complicated 850csi with a great motor.

It's rare, it's unique, the styling is kinda love it or hate it... these things the 8 series shares with the 928. However the thing is a highway cruiser, amusingly best and most agile in 4 liter v8 form. Supercharge one of those and it might be fun. Otherwise... yawn.

In contrast, I do really like the Z8, but those seem to hold their value far too well, and darn it the old-style steering wheel bugs me. But it's light, has a glorious V8, and with the optional hard-shell top you've got a practical beasty.

850csi is like the 928GTS's - probably collectible due to rarity, but almost too rare for a daily driver...

Get one of the criminally-cheap 928 GT's floating around lately and call it good.

Had similar thoughts running through my head. Guess I was looking for confirmation.

My 87 is venetian blue also. Looking forward to getting past the initial pain and enjoying the delight of ownership.

Welcome to shark ownership and congrats.

When these cars are properly maintained they are very rewarding to drive. Nice to look at and marvel at the engineering too!

Love the Z8, don't mind the steering wheel, but no LSD is baffling. BMW's attempt to curtail with TC made no sense and while aftermarket LSD is <said to be> available, it's too much $$ for a car that's a single-striper!

Another rare car with LOT's of potential. 850 all the way, don't waste your time with the 8cyl. I have seen the potential these cars have styling wise. Done up right, they look like a million bucks with the right wheels. Would I take one over a 928, no, but as a second luxury coupe, you bet.

Thanks RV for the schooling. Need to work on my search skills. Looked for the BMW 850 in the entire post instead of narrowing in on the title.
