Default Intermittent Odometer

Ever since I bought my 78 last August the odometer has only worked when it felt like it, speedometer appears to function just fine. On average it records 30 miles for every tank of gas so I'm guessing 10% of the time.

After searching and reading up I bought the replacement odometer gear, pulled the pod and replaced the gear, even though the old one was not broken. While in there I cleaned the contacts, etc. After reassembling everything, the odometer still behaved the same. I thought it was maybe tied into all my warning lights occasionally flashing on, but I replaced the Central Warning Module and that cured the warning light problem but did nothing for the odometer.

While troubleshooting my alternator and charging light issue I again pulled the pod and re-cleaned all the contacts again, still no change on the odometer.

Any thoughts on what to look at next? Could it be the small motor that drives the odometer and if so is there a way to test it?

Thanks for any help on this!

i believe that small motor is called a "stepper" motor. Mine was changed by north Hollywood Speedometer for $141 including shipping and having the speedometer recalibrated. it worked fine up until today and the odo stopped working again. I, too, had previously replaced the odometer gear several years ago (which fixed the inoperative odometer then). I called NHS today and they apologized for it breaking again and asked that I return it to them. The technician said it could've been the stepper motor failing again, but most likely some broken solder joints in the speedometer. Either way, he said they'd fix it and expedite it back to me.

P.S. Sorry, i didn't notice until after posting this, that the original was about a 928 odometer. Mine was a 911.

Thanks Richard. I'll give them a call and see if they have a way of testing it or if I can bring it up to them for testing.
