I once bought a 2500.00 s4 from a frustrated owner. Got her home and fuse #42 was the culprit. Darn that thing ran good.

I would drain out the gas tank and change the fuel filter, if it's been sitting that long it has got to have some bad gas in there now. You don't want that to cause any problems.

Great find and quick diagnosis.

Need to see pics of the engine bay and interior but it appears to be a steal of a deal.

Default Project 928 - Day 2

The fuel take is almost empty so I put some stabilizer/cleaner/booster in there instead of draining it out. I figure I can flush out the old stuff pretty easily and dump in a new take of high octane once I get her on the road.

I took some shots under the hood. Not a lot of bad stuff in there, but some strange electrical things going on.

The Knock Sensors both seem to be disconnected right now (broken apart). I'd rather not pull the entire intake off to replace them right now. Has anyone had experience doing a good patch job? Eventually, everything will come apart, but wanted to get her going before I start ripping her apart.

The other strange thing is the odd relay that goes to the ground. Anyone see something like that? I haven't traced it back yet, so I can't say what it is.

But ... pretty clean under there, aside from the dust. I wish the intakes weren't flaking off, but that's easy to fix.

No major fluid leaks or cracks.

The car will run fine without the knock sensors -- IOW it won't hurt anything. You'll be way down on power but no harm in it.

Where do the wires on the relay lead?

Not sure if you can see it in this photo, but here's a wider view of the relay.

It looks like it's connected to the block next to the water bridge. Can't make it quite out from the picture. The hood switch is missing and looks like the hall sensor is unplugged.

Adding fuel stabliser is only worth it before the fuel has degraded.

Also - being a '90, you may as well drain the tank, and recalibrate the sensor for the digital dash.

To calibrate, you want exactly 15L of fresh fuel in the tank, then hold the digital dash stalk towards you while you turn the ignition to the first on position. It'll say "TANK EICHEN" - then press the trip computer reset button a few times until it says "0" (might be "15" - can't remember) - then either start the car or turn the ignition to off.

That lets the digital dash calculate range remaining accurately for the display.

The car will remember the calibration between battery disconnects - so only needs to be done once - but good to know that your range reading is accurate on a car you've no experience with previously. Of course, you'll get scared silly when the first "Call Range" warning pops up while driving...

Oh - the relay looks like its wired into the AC compressor clutch power wire?

Hilton:

In that procedure, do you release the stalk before pressing the trip reset?

BTW what a great buy !!

Looks like something is up with that harness at the front and someone has tried to jury rig it, tough to see in these pics but take a look at the wiring harness just where it passes above the air con compressor. If someone has done a timing belt job and not routed the harness correctly the belt can cut into the harness.

Just a thought.

+1 on the find.

Do make sure that you update the fuel hoses in the engine bay asap. My 88 had a cracked fuel return (under airbox). There's also a notorius "U" hose there either of which can turn your car into a BBQ. Many threads on this and the $150 to Roger (PM ROG100), or any of our fine sponsors, is one of the best and satisfying projects. It would be a shame to come this far and find out you had a fuel leak with these 20 y/o lines.

Again congrats on the find and welcome to your 2nd shark!
