With the doors closed, the line to the lights and alarm is open circuit, it gets grounded when you open the door. So, if someone cut the wires between the alarm and the door switches(in a manner that leaves the lights working) the alarm should still arm properly, but not trigger when a door is opened.

Probably no big deal either way, especially if you're careful about where you park.

Try this - open both windows, lock the car. twist the inside unlock **** for the door lock - does the alarm sound? try both sides. Its primarily the unlocking that triggers the alarm for the doors.
