Wow Ryan, you did get the GTS fever didn't you. I know where you are coming from and LOVE my GTS, well except for the oil it drinks up.

Anyway, nice Ebay ad, and here are my suggestions as a recent on-line car buyer. Mention that the car drives normally with the PSD not working that the rear diff just doesn't lock up and provide an expected cost of repair. Same with the suspension noise, ie. expected cost of repair.

Providing photos of the things not perfect on the car are a good suggestion.

Another thing I would do... Find some level ground to shot your photos, and get a camera with a zoom lens and stand away from the car to take the pictures with the lens zoomed in. Using a telephoto will get rid of the fish eye. Your current shots look kinda like the rear is jacked up like that Plymouth Fury in "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot", well unless that is the look you were going for.

Ahh - but look at the rest of the cars and pay close attention to what does and doesn't sell on fleabay.
It makes no rhyme or reason - high and low mileage quite often sell for high dollars, many never meet the reserve, and all too often good looking ones never get the first bid.
Watch the way the ad's are written...
Dealers and people we all know better then to think of buying from are continuing to sell cars - at higher then normal prices.

There is a art to the eBay ad just as there is in all advertising.

The thoughts being directed towards Ryan are great - and a learning process for all.
Hopefully the car sells for a good deal more then it is listed for.

It is truly depressing what 928's are "selling" for nowdays.....great for the buyer...awful for the seller who has a nice 928.....sure the beaters or "projects" are valued correctly...but nice 928's that are sorted out are seriously undervalued...... a 1990 with only 106k miles well sorted out doesn't even have 1 bid of $10k....come on.....

I guess I'm NEVER going to sell sharky....since I would NEVER EVER sell her for $10k....$15k....I would seriously consider.....but anything less than that, frankly is insulting......I'm sure Ryan feels the same way

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the only way to get anything close to any decent value for these cars is by driving it out. Unfortunately, too many people wake up screaming in the night after watching horror movies, or listening to frightening stories told around the campfire. So we don't go to horror movies or campfire storytelling sessions anymore. Don't even have to be a victim to be afraid, right? Ryan's car will make a very nice driver for somebody for $10k. Me, I'm closer to Paul's position. My clean and very well cared for and sorted car will likely stay in my fleet for a long time. I may do as he has and supplement it with another interesting ride, but considering the driving value available I'm not at all inclined to give the 928 away.

Somebody buy Ryan's car!!

For those following at home

I think i got somewhere today with the front suspension noise. I made some progress one the passenger side but will need to do the same to the drivers side and will let you know. But that should address one of the outstanding issues on the car.

I wish I was in the buying position instead of the selling one. I will be watching your ebay auction and keeping my fingers crossed for you and me.

Cars are not investments and should not be looked upon that way. They are for personal enjoyment, however it is that you derive it. Some like to drive them, others like to stare at them. Even 993's which have held their value very well are dropping drastically.

The real place to make money is at work. Any investment these days is very questionable.

this sucks... I've been following the market as I may need to sell my 87... but if I can't get at least 10k for it it isn't worth selling, what a shame

I don't really look at these cars as investments but if ever there was a good time to buy and hold, I think this is it. Too bad my garage and bank account are full and empty respectively.

As to the list of problems.

Look at it this way, if you were buying from anyone else then you may not get the ACTUAL list. I am being very forward about the issues. I could claim ignorance and just say its a S4 that drives great blah blah blah like most the other ads on Ebay.

If someone was going to pay me $12,000 I will fix the PSD and the front suspension issue is already 1/2 solved so if you know someone, let me know and we can work it out.

I beg to differ. Fell asleep watching speed channel and was awakened to Barrett Jackson and the excitement of an early 65 Shelby Mustang, not cobra, but mustang fetching close to $450K.

Ryan:

I agree completely and appreciate your honesty, but the psychology of most buyers is closer to Sterling. Most people want a car that they believe is all fixed up, unless they are shopping for a cheap fixer. If you fixed these problems you could get that $12000. You should at the very least figure out what the problems are or buyers will naturally factor in the worst case scenario.

A while back a local owner was trying to sell his real nice car. He brought it to me for an informal PPI as some suggested here. I reported back positive results but noted a few issues that I considered really minor. I think that killed the deal in most peoples' minds. I was surpised, but that's what I saw happen.

You know these cars as well as anyone here, so it is a little surprising you haven't diagnosed the problems you report. Perhaps you are like me in that you may be mentally done with this car, want to move on to something more interesting and just don't have the enthusiasm left to work on it. In that case, you are not going to get what you want and you can accept it and move on.

I love the 928 but a 10k S4 with issues is just not the best deal right now.

I would rather have one of these,

99-01 Mercedes E55- $12k-$15k

05-06 Boxster $20k-$25k

99-00 911 $18k$24k

06 Mercedes E55 with 30k miles and warranty for $30k.

Or how about a 08 C6 Corvette base 1LT for $37k and 0%/60 months financing.
