There is this stuff. I've gotten a few things packed with it. You can find it in smaller quantities for less $$.

Done right, for instance, if the blow-mold case were foamed into a sturdy box, it's quite re-useable.

If I were ever borrow this tool and get it in lesser packaging, I'd return it re-packed in a package which could be shipped again safely. As a contribution to the community.

Hopefully, by the time I do need it some other sucker ... errr, civic minded individual ... will have already done this.

P.S. I'd be willing to send some $$ toward making the new package.

I've considered a foam-in-place option, but the outside of the case is beat up/broken and the latch is gone. Some combination of non-expanding foam in the original style shell, and a padded crate (with handles) to protect the shell is the right answer. Foam alone gets soggy with oil and crud that seems to come home with the tool.

I appreciate the thought on users restoring the case; a recent borrower had volunteered that, but it still came back broken in a thin cardboard box. New packing will happen at some point, most likely here.

When we started the loan-out program, I failed to consider that there would be so much casual damage. Some borrowers have added parts and pieces to help future users, particularly Dave in NorCal who added a bearing splitter and crossbar puller. Most send it back clean and lightly lubricated to fend off the rust devils. Most send it back well-packed. Some don't.

I'm not ready to be in the tool rental business, so it may go to the OC's small-fee-plus-deposit-plus-shipping program. Meanwhile, it's available here in central Oregon now, with free access to the tool, the lift, other tools needed, plus coaching and maybe even help, if anybody would like to drop by for a rear wheel bearing clinic.
