HUGE thanks to SeanR and ROG100!
THANKS!
Roger let me fix my oil pan gasket in his shop today and Sean stuck with me for 14 hours. Thru all the bloody knuckles, bad words, part runs, hard to reach/stubborn bolts, limited space, cold floors, phone calls from Sterling , Vaseline, and c-clamps (motor mounts...don't ask...)
My car finally has no leaks before my long trip to the east and I couldn't have done it without them!
guys!
Merry Christmas!

I now know why Sean at my first GTG asked me if I were on a trip with him, if I would tell anyone if I woke up with vaseline in my "trousers"............
14 hours... sounds like thats about 5 more than a 928 from what I have read. Never had the pleasure.

I knew how this thread was going to go before I clicked it. lmao.
Doing motor mounts/ pan gasket on a 928 vs a 951. Darwin made the job easier by having a 2 piece cross over unit for his turbo, which saved us from having to pull the intake/injectors and everything on the top of the engine, that saved us 2-3 hours, I'm guessing there because I've never done it before. There are some things on a 951 that is easier than on our cars, the steering rack comes to mind, simple removal, simple reinstall. The MM's on our cars are much easier to get in to position and put in quickly, it's the design, but after a few tries and some special tools (vaseline, and a c-clamp) it went smooth, just needed those special tools at the start and it would have saved an hour. We would have shaved 2 hours off the day but we had to go a on a parts run for some waste gate seals. Who at 928'sRus would have thought we'd need turbo parts.
The 928 pan has more bolts, and they are easier to get to due to the angle of the I-4, but again, not bad. We've got bolts an all sides whereas the 951 has then only on the sides, front and back are 1/2 circle shaped and kept in place by pressure. The gasket is a great piece of engineering, very thick rubber and all of the bolt holes have aluminium inserts so over pressure is less of an issue.
Was a fun day/night and was glad to help. The weather was pretty bad all day (wet, cold) so we didn't get to have any "fun" driving but we did trade rides in each of our cars early in the day. I like the 951, and he likes the 928.
Have a safe trip Darwin, can't wait to see that 3.1L turbo when it's done.
