that won't be in the VIN code. In the US there is a sticker in the door that has the month of manufacture. The last four numbers in the VIN are later in the sequence (guessing maybe 2500 worldwide in 88)..so total guess probably made in early 88 (Jan or Feb). 88's were made starting in Sept 87 through I believe July/Aug 88)

I think for a small fee, a Porsche Centre will request the car's originals details from the factory .....

From several posts it seems that in the past that would have been the norm but the certs have become less insightful as of late. I give it a 50/50 chance.

Code:
WPOZZZ92ZJS841710
123456789ABCDEFGH
123  = West Germany Porsche
456 = Filler for ROW models
78   = 92(8)
9 = Filler for ROW models
A    = J is '88 MY
B    = Place of manufacture, S = Stuttgart
C    = (92)8
D = Market car was made for, 4 = ROW
EFGH = Cars number within market specific sequence, 1710 = 1650th S4 made for ROW market
As 0061 was first '88 ROW and 2342 should be last one made between 08/87-07/88 VIN 1710 was very likely done in late spring 1988. I would say its almost 100% certain it was done before July but its another matter how to prove it. ROW cars do not have sticker which would give exact month or date of manufacture and if car has moved from country to country info of first registration date might have been lost in later registration papers.

If it were in German plates originally and factory can't help, one option could be to try to find those German registration documents. It should be possible to get them from Germany at least if Australian registration authorities ask for them from their German counterpart.

Not sure if it will help, but Porsche switched to the digital dash in 89....maybe that's something you could point out (being that your's doesn't have it)..

Hi Peter,

I imported my 928 to Oz from NZ.

To get confirmation of the manufactured date, I asked Porsche directly - had to cough up some cash for a letter of origin that confirmed on Porsche-headed paper. I asked Porsche UK as thats where my car was originally delivered, however I know another local who imported a car from NZ and just asked Porsche Australia for his letter.

Here's what they provided me:
http://users.on.net/~hilton/Porsche_Builddate_Specs.pdf

The important date for import is the 1/1/1989 - not the model year dates. My car is a MY89 car, but was "made" in Oct '88, and hence an allowable import.

The door-jam sticker people here mention only exists on North American cars - Europe/Japan/RoW don't have that sticker.
