Default Selling my 82 928 Competition Package $3,500

This has been a CA, Bay Area owned car from, the plates were replaced because they were personalized by one of the prior owners, I show that I’m the 4th owner but I cannot be positive. This car has pretty extensive mechanical maintenance but it needs paint and interior work. The leather interior is not ripped but the dye has started to flake off. The seats were originally Arctic White.

I am selling because I stumbled onto an 86.5 and I cannot justify having 2 928s when I barely drive one. The car has ~112,000 miles on the odometer but there is a sticker in the warranty book stating Porsche replaced the original speedometer in 1983 with an odometer reading of 4794 when changed. Carfax, smog, and the few records I have point to the mileage being accurate but on cars this age I think condition is more important.

I know the oil pressure says 5 and the temp says normal in the picture, the oil pressure gauge works fine the oil just hadn’t reached temp yet. All gauges and warning lights work properly. I suspect the fuel economy gauge isn’t all that accurate. The A/C works VERY well as does the radio. The car recently passed CA Smog from a Test Only Station.

Yea, that is NOT a bad price at all! If you were about 1500 miles closer, then I would get the young man from my church on this car post haste!

There is nothing like a good road trip! I'd have no hessitation other than a very angry wife to drive this 928 accross country. I forgot to mention that I am in the SF Bay Area so if any PPIs are needed to be arranged you have a local.

Wow, that is a great deal for a well maintained shark!!!! You should have no trouble getting that. I seem to recall a bunch of guys snooping around the list for a under $5k OB shark in the last few months. Craigslist would be a sure thing to I bet, but then again you will get every Tom, Dick and more Dicks kicking your tires with no sale!!!!

Do a search for "looking for 928" or "need help buying a 928" here on the list and see what it kicks back.

Good luck!

Man, I would have liked to pick that thing up a year ago. I'm into my car for a lot more than that and it's not as nice.

Looks great! Not trying to threadcrap but this was all the info I could easily find on the Competition Package on http://www.928s4vr.com/ :

******************
1981 - 1982 928 with "Competition" package option. Appears as the Euro 928 S model. Body and interior upgrades, ie: front and rear spoilers, Recaro sport seats, padded steering wheel, no body rub strips. U.S. cars still came with the 4.5 liter 219HP engine, to the dismay of enthusiasts lusting after the 300HP Euro S engine. The Competition Group accessory list did include one very important component -- a limited slip differential. Though not officially monikered a 928 S by the factory, enough of the goodies are present for its inclusion here. 1982 base price $38,850.00. (note 1).
**********************

Does this car have the LSD trans? It appears to have rub strips and does not appear to have sport seats.

From my past research on the Competition package sport seats only came on the 81 and I've seen other posts state that the US Comp pkg did not have limited slip.

As for this 928 and limited slip I thought the car had it but after reading a few posts regarding how to tell I'm not sure. If the rear of the car is in the air and you turn the rear wheel the other wheel goes in the opposite direction. I think that means a standard diff. Someone here might be able to confirm that.

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for that site.

Thanks, I have no idea how accurate that site is, and naturally there is always some variation from what I read and what turns out to be real.

An easy way to check for an LSD is to jack up one wheel, car in neutral, and turn the wheel using a lug nut and a torque wrench. If it has a working LSD it'll take something like 20-40 ft/lbs to turn the wheel (slipping the LSD clutches to do so.) However yes the both wheels in the air thing, if the car is in neutral, will tell you if there is a clutch in there at all. If there is no LSD unit the power (you spinning the wheel) is more easily transferred to spinning the other wheel backwards rather than back down the torque shaft. Note that if you forget and leave the car in gear when you do this test, the only place for the power to go is to spin the other wheel backwards, but the LSD would resist you.

geoff_b.................beg, borrow and steal (well maybe just beg and borrow).
To find a 928 that clean and maintained by enthusiast here on the "list" at that price is IMO is a once and in lifetime find!!!!

If I did not make a purchase earlier this year, I would be on it!!!

For what you've done to this car if I were you I'd reconsider selling it. Having one is fun but as I just found out having multiples is better (except when it comes to buying parts). Besides they just look so cool hanging out in your driveway together! Good luck with the sale!
