bolts for engine stand
Hi all.
I've got my motor out, hanging by the hoist and cannot find a location that carries bolts long enough to attach my engine stand to the top bellhousing bolts. I've called my local NAPA, hardware, Sears, and Pep Boys. As you all know they are 19mm 6-point headed bolts, but they simply aren't long enough. It appears they need to be 3" to 3-1/2" in length. Any suggestions? Thanks, Keith |
Keith-
Ace is the place with the helpful hardware, man.... https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...t=engine+stand |
ive got a pair of grade 12.?
I'll send them to you for $12 shipped. |
I went to Ace also, they had them. way too long, had to back them up with washers but it gott'r done
|
thanks guys, I'll try Ace.
Ryan I appreciate the offer. If I strike out I may still PM you on those. Keith PS - I appreciate you not asking me why I was such a knucklehead and unprepared. I already lashed myself to the bone before I asked.:) |
There's a couple of suspension bolts that will do the job and allow you to put the engine on the stand.
The front 19mm bolts on the lower control arms are M12x1.5 and 100mm long. Info from this post here: https://rennlist.com/forums/showpost...4&postcount=11

I am about to pull my 16v as well. So, the bottom two bolts are okay, it's just that I need longer ones for the top two at the bell housing?
|
Well the bottom two holes in the engine block are through holes, and are not threaded. The top two holes in the engine block are the threaded ones that you would use to attach the block to an engine stand. These are the ones requiring M12 x 1.5 100mm long bolts. I was able to find them at my local hardware once I knew what size they were. Thanks to the help from the folks on Rennlist!
Good Luck! |
Napa had them for me. washers needed

Figures I'd make this more difficult than necessary....
After reading about top heavy S4 motors, I decided what I need is a decent geared engine stand, and this seemed to fit the bill: Sunex 8300GA: https://webfiles.uci.edu/redwards/pu...2012-14-08.jpg Of course, the mounting arms have these enormous bolt holes, 110 mm long: https://webfiles.uci.edu/redwards/pu...2012-14-08.jpg So- of course the 100 mm long M12x1.5 bolts won't work, and McMaster, BoltDepot, etc. don't have anything longer than 100mm in an M12x1.5. I figure I need at least 130-140 mm bolts. So: #1) Find longer bolts? #2) Buy M12x1.5 threaded rod, cut to length, double nut? #3) Take a hacksaw to the engine stand and shorten the mounts? My understanding is that you want at least 20-25 mm of thread engaged on the engine. That enough? Thoughts? (Other than I'm an idiot for not have thought about this before buying the damn stand....) |
I'd chop the stand, but that steel might be REALLY hard.
