Default Auto to 5sp Parts List + Price -- Help me, Jim Bailey

I thought it might be an interesting thought exercise to put together a parts list for the auto to 5 speed conversion with current prices. At least, I'm interested in it.

So for those thinking about taking the plunge, what parts would we need to purchase, and what would it run?

Jim, can you help a brother out? Thanks in advance.

Rear aluminum cross member,

Manual tranny,

torque tube,

Flywheel and clutch,

release arm,

Clutch master and slave with all lines,

Firewall mount (or floor mount like I have in my car),

shifter linkages,

Plan on around $5-7k for conversion.

agreed not for the faint of heart, and you have to be able to weld, and be willing to cut holes in the chassis.

I know of two five speed tubs that need a new home. Shipping might be a real bitch though.

Yah that is one way to do it, I personally prefer not to go about it that way.

Agreed with Sterlings comment, I forgot the pedal assemblies, I do have the flywheel, but I did forget about the short shaft and coupler.

Just buy a 5 sp. I seriously looked into this for my '85 auto, and decided to sell it and just buy a 5 sp.

The money side didn't work out, and the effort side didn't work out.

And my '85 was in very nice condition, so I didn't want to screw around with it. For me, it was the right choice.

At this point, the current car has become a canvas upon which I've bestowed a lot of personalization.
Besides, I've got too much money sunk into the current car to punt--I want to consume a lot of the restoration dollars that have thus far been allocated.

I'd want one of the newer transmissions with the 2.20 rear end.

I'd have Greg Brown do the conversion--I'm sure it would be labor intensive; however I don't have the tools, time, space or expertise to take on such a project--but I do have some cash, which makes most of the other problems go away.

I figured it would be around $10k - $12k to have it professionally done. I need a new transmission anyway, which would probably be at least $4k installed, so it's maybe an $8k differential, and the 5speeds sell for more than the autos, so I'd really be only talking about a couple thousand that I'm spending purely to increase the enjoyment...

I have been thinking of "downsizing" to an OB, and an a/t would even be OK.
I have spent so much time and $ making my S4 perfect (to me) that it's kind of too nice to use daily.

Yes Brian time and money are interchangable. In fact, money has as it's basis just accumulated time . Why is Gold valuable ? it takes a lot of time to find it Sand on the other hand is nearly free I have a very nice rebuilt Borg Waner box (Greg Brown) with limited slip for $3,500 .....more like gold than sand ! The rest of the bits we have as well. Over the years we have provided the parts for several such exchanges. The only fabrication /custom work is mounting the bit on the firewall for the clutch master. The rest is just nuts and bolts

BRian
Since your auto is already dying....then the cost is greatly reduced....... Still substantial...but "less" in theory......

What about a stronger rebuilt auto....like Steve Catteno makes? With your SC you will need it?
