When is a rear half-shaft "bad"??
Recently took the car in for safety inspection (89 S4) and was told I needed a new passenger side real axle.
There was a rip in the CV boot (outer CV) that had been there for a while. I don't hear any "clicking" or anything, but the odd time, when turning a tight corner, I will hear a "clunk" from that side.
The shop said there was "play" in the axle.
Now, do I need a complete new axle or can just this CV joint be replaced (can't remember if it's the inner or outer that can't be removed)?
I always thought the CV/axle was fine until you hear the "clicking"???

Front wheel drive CV joints will click when they are bad during cornering due to the high angle they see. Rears don't see these extreme angles so you might not hear the clicking. Ripped boots let dirt in and grease out, both which wear the joint faster. Chances are your joint is bad if its been this way for a while like you say.

+1 what John said. When the CV gets dirty it accelerates the wear and the play or slop increases dramatically. Keep the boots intact and the grease and joint will last almost forever. The inner CV will come off the axle the outter is welded on in the later cars. (89 up I think).

Hello all
Remove the shaft , strip down the joint , if you have a press or can get the use of one clean & remove the grease (degreaser) regrease ,inspect the joint,if the components are ok , replace the boot , fairly easy to do once you have the shaft out.
