WOW! That is beyond a typical transformation. The car was an absolute wreck before you bought it. Sad that anyone would let a car that nice get that bad.

So are those the original colors of the car or did you switch?

You can see the original color (dunkelblau) on the top of the door in the third picture. Several areas of the car had been repainted in the original color due to body damage. Then at some point, one of the POs had it resprayed by Maaco or someplace like that.

The original color of the interior was blue. What they did in there was almost heartbreaking. One of the owners decided he didn't like the blue color (I can't say I blame him) so he decided to change it to black. So they bought a bunch of the cheapest black felt-like material they could find sprayed the glue on it and the existing carpet and put this felt material over the original carpet. Then they used some black rattle can paint and spray painted the seats black. Here's what was upsetting. They also spray painted the leather console and leather dashboard as well. After that, they put those protective caps on the dash and pod. The door panels were redone (poorly) with some black vinyl, and the leather armrests were then spray painted. I can't recall the exact condition of the quarters, but what I do remember is that they were held in place with drywall screws and came out in pieces. I burned them out back along with most of the original carpet. Absolutely nothing was salvageable from the original interior. The interior in it now is from this '87 S4 you see on the forklift.

This is some more damage I had to deal with. The car got hit, or hit something at the a-pillar which breached the rocker panel here. The rocker panel is three layers and all three had rust perforation. So I had to replace sections on all three layers. This damage is probably why my sunroof has never worked properly.

This is after the repair. I still hadn't ground down the welds in this picture.

The driver's side quarter panel had been damaged a few times and had about 3/8" of body filler in some places. So much that the marker light sat about 1/4" below the surface. From being pounded on with a hammer the steel became brittle and work hardened so I just opted to replace it.

I don't have any pics of the floorboard replacement.

I forgot to mention, I did change the color. It's now '87 Venetian blue (L36P.) The only area that didn't get painted was the firewall, radiator support, and shock towers.

It's real easy for a car to get that bad. Take a nice car and someone who can barely afford it. Make that someone a ****ty driver. And then when they wreck it, pay out of pocket for the repairs to keep the insurance rates under control.

Even if that car and its parts were FREE the work you have done to that is worth more than the car is now! My hat is off to ANYONE willing to take on a resto like that one! Congrats! That was a bunch of hard work, it is what these cars deserve though, not the life and fate we find so many of them in today.

So let me ask you this question. When you purchased this car were you thinking "project car" or was it a means of buying it at a low price and working on it slowly to get it to where you want?

If you had to do it all over again would you and is it realistically cheaper to do it this way?

Seriously, the work you've done is nothing short of amazing and the car has a new lease on life.

Nice work J! Few have done as much to their cars in so short a time. Even fewer can say it's back on the road and running right now.

That's some really nice work. Looking forward to seeing it in person at the dyno day!

BTW- That's the exact way I was planning to do the intake with the red and black on the lettering. (So don't think I copied it when you see it in a few weeks).

Nice work!

Also, how do you like the wheels? I'm not a big fan of the stock manhole covers and mine look like crap because the anodized surface is half off. I'm going to paint a set of phone dials and go retro (in black w/silver) any plans to change yours?

Is it cheaper? No. I could have had a nice S4 for what I've got in this.

When I bought it, I didn't think that it was going to require such extensive work. I wouldn't have bought it if I had known.

I think the only advantage to doing this is the fact that there's a staggering amount of new parts on the car. Unlike most, I have no concerns about reliability at this point in time. I've got receipts for parts scattered everywhere. On occasion I think about selling it, but I'd lose my *** if I did. So I basically use it as my daily driver at this point because that's really the only way to get any value out of it.

As for the wheels, I think they're ****. I actually polished off most of the anodized coating that remained and it was a slight improvement, but not much. Hopefully by the end of the summer I'll be able to pick up a set of C3s.

I have to say I'm glad to see that so many OB's are being saved from the scrap heap.

Here are some pics of my '79 5 Speed project:

Best,

Thanks James. The 944 is long gone. Sold about a couple of weeks after you inquired. And the 928 .... it will have to peeled from my cold dead hands

Scott that is an amazing transformation and a beautiful/unique color combination.

I see that each one of you are putting in small modifications to update the cars as you go, almost like ordering up a new 928 just the way you want it.
