Default battery issue..............

Yesterday, while I was driving the 928 everything just went dead and the car died and I coasted to the side of the road. I proceeded to check the battery and was greeted with smoke seeping through the deck carpet. I accessed the battery compartment and received more smoke (panicking now) The lid was smoking hot (got burned) and the ground strap had almost all of its insulation off. Opened the lid with the factory lug wrench (like I said it was hot) and it turn out that my pos. battery terminal grounded its self on the battery lid. I thought great, I just fried my electrical system. Tried to start it and it started and ran like nothing happened. Is there an fix for this??

Thanks Frank

Either your battery is not the correct size, or it is not strapped down.

I know mine has a plastic cover over it, you should get one of those. Sorry to hear about his.

Make sure the exhaust hose is also connected to the battery to avoid exhausting gasses into the cabin.

Are there any aftermarket stereo wires?

Is the battery the correct size?...........they fit quite deeply. Also, batts that I've used over the years have a plastic cover over the +ve terminal.

It's what happens when you don't sleep on a Saturday night.

If it's the correct battery size, check for a piece of wood under the battery that might be positioning it too high. I've seen people put plywood under the battery when the battery box gets rusty on other cars.

My battery (Autolight group 40?) came with the plastic cover for pos+ terminal. My year apparantly didn't come with any tie down which I always thought was odd. Better check your battery at the auto parts store for load etc after arching also. I wonder if it would be safe/wise to use the same close cel foam that is common for the hood insulation on the bottom of the battery box cover.

Damstrom the battery hold down is secured at the rear of the battery box it should have a curved piece of stainless steel with a hole on one ende for a bolt and the the other end holds down the bottom of the battery . As far as i know every 928 should have some kind of battery hold down, If your isnt there it would be wise to get one from one of the the big 3

Any pics of a of a stock battery compartment? My pos. post has several wires going to it. Just want to see if this is "stock" or what. No tie down or rubber boot - be talking to the "big 3"

Thanks

Positive on the S4+ has at least three 'extra' conductors to battery positive. Two for fan motors, one for FI nozzles.

Frank, what year is your car?

On a '91 you may have up to 7 additional wire connections direct to the Battery +ve post depending on equipment installed:

Fan1, Fan2, LH, EZK, ABS control, PSD control, Factory Phone

Thanks for all of the inputs. sounds like my pos. battery has correct configuration with several wires connected to the pos. terminal.

Thanks for all your advice.
without out having a 928 community here its hard to know what "stock" is.

Thanks

Not trying to bust you, but part of the community mindset you thanked us for, is knowing if you discovered the cause or solution to the original problem.

So thus far you have determined that you have a stock batt connection. To be clear, you shouldn't need any rubber boot. That would be unique to your battery, not Porsche; I've dealt w/ 3 batterys in two cars and not had a boot. If there was arching, it was prob caused by the lack of the tie down which is obviously needed and easy to replace. Any further problems? Did you tighten and/or clean any grounds?

Unexplained unconsciousness is always a matter of concern.
