Default PorKen!!! How does one UN-install tensioner

I developed a small coolant leak a couple days after installing the TB and Porkensioner.....I need to UN-install now. HOW is it done? In the instructions it says to depress tensioner in vice slowly but no mention of removing from the block. How far and fast does the pin in the tensioner expand? Will it be a lethal weapon? Any help would be great...as always trying to get this done over the weekend.

Thanks!

What's leaking? The water pump gasket, or is the plug not sealed?

Why do you need to remove the PKsn'r to fix it?

The water pump plug is the only coolant related part of the tensioner system.

Default If you do have to remove the tensioner...

Turn engine to #1, -45°. Remove covers, pulleys, and balancer.

...insert 8mm allen key, and slowly rotate pulley CW to push in tensioner piston in until pin can be re-inserted.

If you're not removing the balancer, then remove the two bolts on the same side holding the tensioner, then loosen the third. Continue loosening the third bolt, and the tensioner will swing around and the piston will extend to maximum, ~11mm.

If it is necessary to retract tensioner piston off the car, place tensioner in vice, and slowly retract piston. It will push in a few mm, then stop. Wait a few seconds before continuing. It may take 5-10 mins to retract, longer when cold!
Insert pin when fully retracted.
If retracting in a vice - don't force the tensioner! It will destroy the internal seals.

Thanks Ken....I just got the pin back in. I'm not sure where the leak is so I'm going to redo the water pump. I know I used rtv on the bolt you ID in the instructions. What I ended up doing was used a large pair of vice grips. Little by little I pinched the lever down on to the tensioner. I had just enough time to readjust grip before tensioner expanded....I sure hope! the tensioner is OK.

If you're talking about the tensioner, then a forum search for "PorKen tensioner" or "PorKensioner" or "PKsn'r" will tell you a lot.

You can also go (here) to download the manual, or talk to Roger, at 928's R Us, who sells them (and is a site sponsor).

Dean,

The tensioner should be OK, but I would use a 8mm allen, next time...

If you have the water pump off (or putting a new pump on), you can use red Loctite on the plug, after cleaning the threads with brake cleaner and drying.

Thanks Ken.....I THINK the water pump was not torqued adequately. The bolts came out waaaay too easy. Do you know what the torque is suppose to be ??? That aluminum block always has me a little apprehensive when it come to cranking down on bolts.

Dean, I think 6 ft-lbs is the right number, go around a few times and sneak up on that number. Little bolts into aluminm make me *very* nervous. I used anti-seize hoping to be able to remove them in the future, but I've also used weak loctite in the past with good resuts- seals the threads which seems to prevent corrosion.
