Question 5 spd won't shift

The linkage on my '89 S4 5 spd. is VERY sloppy all of a sudden. It feels as if it has come apart. How do I get acess to the shift linkage?? If I pull UP on the shift **** it will catch and work, otherwise the shifter does nothing at all. Pulling up gets a nice clunk noise from the front of the torque tube area. Any help? Any diagrams out there to look at?

Thanks,

John Boucher

Exclamation

Check out Greg's tips page at http://www.nichols.nu/. Look under Transmission, Manual for "Shifter Cup Failure". Hope that helps.

928 Intl website also has a detailed fixit procedure for the shifter cup. The cup is only aroung $25, but the job is a PITA. Did it just 1 month ago. A shop would probably charge about 2-3 hours labor.
