Question EBay Fische manuals

Anyone had experience with the 928 shop mauals sold on Ebay on micofische? Obviously, I realize you would also need a fische reader, but they sure are a lot cheaper than the bound set.

Cool

The fiche images and photos are hard to read, as is any fine print.

I bought a used 9 volume set from the PO. I could easily sell them today for more than what I paid. I think of them as much as an investment as I do a quality tool. YMMV.

Fische smische - get the manuals on CD from Jim Morehouse. Infinitely more useable, as you can enlarge images and print the pages you need for working on the car.

Better still, buy the volumes, use them for years, then sell them for even more than you paid for them.

I have had them on back order from 928SP since the day after i bought my car.
I still dont have them.

I bought the phish from 928SP as a stopgap measure till i got manuals.

if you pay more than 25 dollars for the phish (what 928SP charges) your getting ripped off

One trip to the library was enough for me.
I got the CD's from jim too.

Much Better.

Fortunatly for me my new friend with the Stoesek 928 has a set if im really desperate.

The CD's have been ok so far.

Tips, Micro fische, CD Roms and Manuals for DYI's.

I started with the Tips from the various web sites and magazines from around the world and then purchased a set of Micro Fische from a UK member of the Porsche Club Great Britain. I then aquired a MF reader and nearly went blind tracing out electrical circuits when I installed an imobliser and spent hours trying to find information on the MF by continuously searching the various sections.

The problem with fische is that they will get dirty with use and you end up magnifying the dirt with the section you wish to view.

Unless you have a viewer/printer you always have to back refer to the fische when undertaking work even if you have the reader in your garage/workshop. Quite difficult when tracing out schemetics.

Jim's CD Rom is great, especially with the index that goes with it. As explained in one of the previous messages you can zoom in on the image to get a larger view and you can take a print of the section that you need. Combine this CD of the fische/manuals with the Spare Parts CD Rom for your model 928 and you have a very powerful tool, especially when you only need to print off the pages you want to do the work and take it with you into the workshop.
It soes not matter if it get grease etc. on it as you only need to print out another copy when needed.

You can also take your portable computer into the workshop with you if you feel that you need on-site viewing of the manuals on the CD or even go to the next step by connecting up your portable printer. Hi-Tech stuff.

The hard copy manuals are the best currently available as you get the best reproduction and as Ed states they will only increase in value with time, especially when they are no longer available/printed by Porsche.

In another lile I had some fantastic Workshop Manuals from Germany for my NSU RO-80.

Fortunate for 'you all' in the States, you can purchase the manuals, not so lucky for those of us 'down under' as it is not a requirement for importer of cars to import workshop manuals for the DYI people, so the only way is to imort them from the States, but rate of exchange is not so good at the moment.

If Porsche, in their wisdom, would produce the manuals on CD Rom that would be the 'Tops. Did anyone view the Porsche Spare Parts CD for sale on he Ebay the other day, very impressive reproductions($50).

Maybe the next step in the evolution is for someone like Ed to scan in the hard copies of the manuals onto CD's together with the supplements etc. Is there any one out there putting their hand up to do the job?

Unfortunately, it is a violation of copyright laws to do what you suggest. The lawyers at Porsche are just sitting around chompping at the bit hoping that someone would be stupid enough to try it.

On the microfiche manuals and CD:
First, I agree wholeheartedly w Ed...if you can find/afford the hard copy, that is the best way to go. Although the CD's are usable and you don't have to worry about dirtying them up, I find them a little more difficult to use than hard copy. The biggest downside of the CD is that the wiring diagrams of the later MY cars are tough to read...very large pages w small print was 'compressed' to a standard fiche image size and that's what's on the CD. Most are OK but I've found a few where I just couldn't read them no matter what the zoom. Earlier MY diagrams are fine. One project on my list is to take the hard copy wiring diagrams and get them scanned in to hi res images. Haven't done it yet but will let the group know when I do. Also as Ed mentioned, there are potential copyright issues but I think if you own the fiche, it might be ok (based on extensive legal training I've received watching TV..:-)

So the CDs are a cheap alternative but if you're going to do a lot of work on the car, you're probably better off to eventually get the hard copy. BTW, I agree the parts fiche's are a crucial supplement...lots of good 'blow-up' pictures of every assembly on the car w part names and numbers...makes me sound like less of an idiot when I talk to Jeannie too instead of "you know that round thingie that sits to the right of the thermostat?".

The PET CD is essentially a "parts fiche" for all models/years. I was surprised to see them on ebay since I'd been told that Porsche was pretty tight on their distribution. They look like their originals but someone told me they were very expensive to buy from Porsche...must not be right since one guy had a dutch auction for 20 or 30 of them. The one thing you don't get on the PET that you have on the parts fiche is the "used on MY to MY" data which can be useful if you're looking for used parts. Of course, you can just scan thru the various MY's and get it.

Here is the email I got from Jim Morehouse about the manuals on CD's:

I've got the parts microfiche on cd for your car, 87-91 as
well as the shop manual microfiche on cd. I"ve been making
copies for people for the same price that we paid when we
did the conversions......$15 for the parts fiche and $35
for the shop manuals. If you want priority mail, please add
$4. I've got the other years as well as the euro 78-82 and
83-86 if you know of anyone looking for them.
If you'd like a copy, you can send the funds via paypal to
my account, jmorehouse@fast.net, or mail a check to
Jim Morehouse
6891 Curvy Drive
New Tripoli, PA 18066

I ordered mine and I can't wait to get it.
