Question ATF Cooler Inside Radiator

Any-body out there in 928 land know where i can source a replacement internal ATF cooler that fits inside the water cooling radiator. (Mines Leaking)

Cool

Edinburgh castle.

[Been there, by the way~]

-Your as likely to find one there as pretty much anywhere else...I recently had to replace my radiator, and had no luck at all finding an oil cooler. The oil cooler and transmission coolers are apparently interchangeable...

You are going to have to find an external air-to-ATF cooler and mount it. That is what I did for my oil cooler- the only radiator I could get had no coolers at all. If you manage to find a radiator with an oil cooler, and decide to mount it as a transmission cooler...be VERY VERY careful removing it! They are not very strong and can break if you attempt to remove them.

Thanks Normy. My 928 already has an external/ Atf -air cooler but i was hoping to find an internal replacement rather than replace the whole radiator.

Hi

my atf cooler in the rad split and i got water in the transmission which wrecked it so i had to have the box rebuilt

the oil cooler also split and i got oil in the water

I had the coolers re conditioned twice and they kept failing so rather then buying a new rad i bought exernal coolers and had the pipework made up

this eliminates the risk of oil in the water and water in the box

hope this helps

cheers

d all the pipework made up and

Hi tim, How long do you reckon you had the oil/ water mixing before the box was damaged? i think i have caught this within a couple of days of it going. Perhaps 40 - 50 miles. What was the fluid like when the box was drained? Mine was like strawberry milkshake(thick). but no seperated water........... Jim

Hi Jim

mine was also like a frothy milkshake colour which is what happens when the water mixes with the atf.

my advice would be to get a power flush and not just drain the box and torque converter as you need to get all the water out, so the box, torque converter, cooler lines and rads are not contaminated at all

then run the car with fresh atf and filter and see what happens

the water gets into the brake bands and lifts them off so you will eventually get metal to metal
a bit like when brake pads wear out

i was unlucky and needed a rebuilt box £400 and a rebuilt torque tube £150 but i had to get it out and replace it myself which is a long job

its basically a Merc box

hopefully you have caught yours in time

definately get a power flush and change the filter before you drive it

cheers
