To all the door experts, I recently found my key just spinning round N round in the key hole and wouldn't lock. I took the entire locking mechanism apart and either one of two things happend:
- the white hinge on the locking mechanism wich connects to the lock had fallen off or my cylinder lock is screwed up.
Attached isn't the best picture but my camera is sucking right now. I've highlighed the area I think is the problem. The piece looks like it's broken but i couldn't confirm.

What happens when you try locking the car from the passenger's side? I have only had to replace a broken door latch, but don't you have to get "way in there" to determine the cause of lock error as well? It's very cramped, but if you've opened up the guts of the door workings, you should be able to see what's not actuating when you turn the key.
buy a new lock cyclinder and swap out the tumblers then install it . I had to do this on my 79. i think that you may have to carfully drill out a pin on the side of the housing to release the tumbler cylinder and i think I used a shank from a rivet to refill the hole and i used loctite green setting solution to hold it.
IIRC the new cylinder was 75.00 , and came with 2 new keys
I verified today with my other door lock that the cylnder housing is broken. The part that connects to the pastic connector broke or atleast half of it did.
So that mystery solved. Anyone have a used cylnder lock for sale???
While I had the other door lock I out, I easily switched them so atleast the driver side lock will work and the passenger door now stays permanently locked!!!
Took about 10 minutes!

Does your vacuum lock (pass side) on the 79 still work? The last few years mine only works when it's warm outside. If it's cold, I've got to lock the pass side manually. Thinking I just need to get in the door and clean and lubricate it??!!
Vacuum lock?? What's that? I'm pretty sure my eggpod is the source of my frustration as it is probably cracked because it's no vacuum, thus no locks.
There's not a whole in there to go wrong. the locking mechanism is all one unit. IIRC, there are only two vacuum lines that run to a port that when 'pushed' with air flips the mechanism to lock or unlock. You also may have a small leak also causing the inconsistent operation. But cleaning and throwing some new grease on can't hurt!
