I was looking into the under hood light that wouldnt.
I removed the plastic cowl under the hood, traced the harness to the connector that had 3 wires going into it, disconnected the connector and turned on the lights. I got power to the car side of the connector so i took the ohm meter and set it on tone and for continuity to the center of the light fixture, no joy for the gray wire.
I removed the light fixture screw, and looked at the light fixture, on one side it has a small tab thats bent in to hold the innards of the light fixture together.
I unbent the tab and the inner contact slides out it has a metal spring and a round plastic contact holder that has 3 small cut on the sides of it, I seperated the slides till the contactor pin started to come out , I removed it from the plastic part and out fell a glass tube filled with mercury,
This has a metal wire thats cut at one end, i took the ink (grey eraser) eraser and cleaned both metal ends of this glass tube, also the brass center contact on both sides, I checked for continuity from the bulb side of the harness to the contact and I found continuity, i replaced the glass tube with the cut wire part closest to the wire , reinserted the brass contact part, and slid the pastic back into the bulb holder, inserted the bulb and bent the tab back so to hold things together when the bulbs removed.
Connected the harness back together and now we have lights, car is an 85 32V

Does any have an idea as to why the parking lights need to be on? If it has it's own mecury switch...
BTW, mine's working now. That was a good warm-up project for this early AM. Thanks guys.

Digging up old thread here -- easily fixed my hood light after following stan's directions! Thanks!

That's one of the cool things about this place. Directions for just about everything are here. Somewhere.
If you know who to pay attention to (and Stan is at the top of that list), you can do any job.

Hey guys, thanks for posting.
Could it be that the pre-90s have got this mercury switch and the 91+ have a got a different mechanism? I don't have my 91 here right now to look, but I am thinking this is the case.
And btw, wow, a mercury switch! That is probably according to EPA rules long since NLA or something...

suspect when I’m accelerating, using the capabilities of the massive torque of our engines, the hood light will come on! Hmm
might come on if parked on a steep incline (not good to park on an incline for a number of reasons but this might be another, although it can’t draw that much power)

Amazing the things I learn here! Messed with this years ago and now thanks to this thread it's working. Never would have guessed that switch was in there.
