An oddity?

Hi, all!! Consider this if you may.... A MY86, 32v, S4 brakes, ABS, 5spd, sunroof, (deleted sidestrips) and an S4 spoiler (factory or added later is unknown) "G" body (would make sence...) but a sub 1000 serial number ! Is this car an oddity or just another 86.5? Any thoughts?

dprantl 03-25-2008 01:25 AM

Most probably someone added the S4 brakes and spoiler to an early '86. Most '86's came with ABS brakes (or maybe all of them)...

Hmmm.. I thought the same thing for a minute, Dan, but I can't imagine the trouble to do it all... right down to the ABS lite in the dash. Still, I guess it's possible..

Is your car a US or Euro / Rest of World model? The Euro/ROW cars had ABS as an option since 1984. Not sure when they changed the front suspension to S4 style on the Euro/ROWs, though.

If you really want to know, go to your friendly Porsche dealer and ask them to print out the records and history of your car. Or pay PCNA for a certificate of authenticy.

Hi Nicole... It's a US car x California, and been in Canada since 1996. Calling a dealer might just be what one should do, tho... Does the sub 1000 serial number throw you off a bit?

Nicole 03-25-2008 03:32 AM

Yes, it does. But one never knows - sometimes Porsche rolled changes into production, or produced press or photo cars of a new model during the previous model year run. Nothing can be ruled out 100%, until you have done a fact check.

The only thing I can tell you is that if you have an S4 spoiler, it did not come with the car. In fact, that makes me wonder, if anyone did a "make one out of two" type conversion. However, from what I understand it would be extremely hard to retrofit ABS...

Got some pictures of your car? What's the exact VIN (last four digits)?

In the production process when does Porsche give a car it's number?

Is it possible a car is given the number in the early stages and then for whatever reason it's pulled from the line and sits unfinished for a time then is put back in the line to be completed with newer options that make the serial number seem out of sequence...

I have also seen a sub 1000 vin 86 with big brakes

What I was saying is that all early '86's that I have seen have had the ABS system installed from the factory. The addition of just S4 brakes is not too difficult, especially if you can find a donor S4.

What is the code on your engine?...If it's 28/45 or 28/44 it could be the low compression 32 valve motor available for AU and in Germany as catalyzed motor (available in 86 for those wanting a tax credit). As far as I know, all Euro 86's came with the big brakes.

Perhaps someone that knew this special ordered it that way from the factory...Porsche would do pretty much anything for money (and this was already being put on all euro's so no big deal to slap it on a random US car)..

PorKen 03-25-2008 01:31 PM

ABS was available ROW in '84, optional US in '85, standard everywhere '86.

It's not a true US '86.5 (ROW '86) unless it has square jack points, and aluminum rear toe brackets.

Is front suspension old or new design? Is ABS old or new style version (hub wheel teeth count)? Does option sticker list M593 option? 583 is code for ABS before it became standard.

Gotcha, Dan.... And more than likely the higher possibility... A bit of deducing after the fact might find the original owner in for a brake job...what... 4-5 years after original purchase?... And then the dealer says..."Hey!! For an extra $xxx dollars, we can give you some SERIOUS whoa power.... Are ya IN?"
It's possible....
