Post CLUTCH REMOVAL 1984 928S

First. Hi, I am new to the form...have lurked for a while. There are some really good hands here.

Anyway I have a 1984 928s 5spd which was my baby...until I wrecked it. It no longer rolls. A major hit. I had done a lot of work on it...among the parts is a ONE WEEK OLD full clutch install...including the Intermediate plate.

Would it be possible to get these parts out just putting the car up on jack stands. It would be very difficult for me to get the car to a lift. Do you think there is enough clearance to get the right items out of the way to pull the clutch discs and the Intermediate plate? What would be a recomended procedure...i do not have the shop guides...but figure since the car will not be going back together there are some small items I could skip or...DESTROY to pull these expensive parts.

I have done clutch jobs on jack stands before...but on mazda's rx7s. Not exactly a process i want to repeat. But, I would love to have those parts to put into a newly acquired 1984 928s which needs the full clutch kit installed. I will not be doing the install...but figure I could handle yanking the parts out of my wrecked 84.

Thanks the plan. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Yes. You should be able to put it up on jackstands, pull the cat, the starter, slave cylinder and lower bell cover. Then you disconnect the rel;ease lever, pull back the coupler, tap back the alignment dowels, shim the pins, and then unbolt the clutch pack. Then, theoretically, it should pull back about 1/2" and drop out. Theoretically because my pilot shaft appears to be frozen in the pilot bearing so the pack is stuck on the shaft. If I could pull that back, I'd be golden. Instead, I'm stuck right now. But I have seen this done before on a single dis clutch, and heard about many others doing it. That is why I'm pulling my hair out now.

By the way, is the passenger side fender and sunroof OK on your Pewter car, or did they get mangled in the wreck?

Thanks for the reply. Doesn't sound too difficult. Always easier to take out than put in. Curious...how many hours would estimate for the gig?

As for my once beautiful 1984 928s. It was a perfect car head to tail. Great shape. Everything worked beautifully and there are many new parts...including the clutch, AC control head, brake rotors, etc. Some I will use on my project car. Another 1984 928s in need of a little work.

Anway the body is shot in front of the A pillars. It was a hard hit. Forward your email and I will send you a few picts. The front quarters are bent like modern art. BUT, the sunroof is good...and the associated mechanicals.

Sad just thinking about it.

You should be able to pull it easily in about three hours if the wreck didn't affect anything. The hard part is getting most of the interference out of the way. I snapped all 4 bolts at the back of the cat (no biggie, got SS replacements). If my pilot shaft hadn't been stuck, I'd say you can pull the clutch in about 1/2 hour after all the interference is removed. Since yours was just recently redone, you should be good to go on the removal. So you are limited by how fast you can pull the cat, starter, slave cyl. and cover. Make three shims out of some coat hanger wire bent into little Us for the three pins. Get a punch to push the pins back. Mine were frozen, and I managed to get them clear of the flywheel.

My email is: johneifert@hotmail.com My sunroof and passengers side panel have some paint deterioration. Interested in the condition on your parts car. Looking at my options.

Heinrich in Seattle would be interested in your drivers side interior quarter panel if it is leather and the older perforated leather speaker grill style. I know many 84's had the updated large speaker system.

Thanks for the replies. My 1984 has the speaker grills instead of the perforated panels. Was this a rolling change on the 1984 assembly line...I have only seen 1 84 with the perforated panels.

Guess I am going to be pulling a clutch soon.
