windshield washer pump
 

i recall a recent post about some unfortunate soul who had to replace a windshield washer pump, which we all know is conveniently located beneath the coolant overflow tank. well, this week, that unfortunate soul is myself. symptoms are this: pump runs so fuse is not blown. instead of H20 on windshield, it's being dumped down pax side of engine bay. haven't had someone operate pump while underneath car to check for split hoses etc., BUT, can this pump leak from anywhere other than the hose connections, like from the rear square area with the tiny 4 bolts? being the lazy sob that i am, i would like to try an alternate method of removal so as to avoid the airbox, tank filler, coolant reservoir removal journey. has any enterprising soul ever removed this pump from underneath? it looks like about a 4 on the pita scale, ie: remove electical connection with 8" needlenose, cut 3 rubber fasteners, pull off unclamped hose, unscrew clamped hose (that area is prom-queen tight.) anyone btdt?

When I was confronted with the same problem on my '86.5, DR recommended a used S4 washer reservior. This version has both pumps on it. That way you re-route the washer hoses and forget about the old pump.

that's an interesting mod, however, i found the problem. the good news is that the pump is not leaking, probably saving me a c-note. the bad news is that the "T" connector (check valve?) off the high pressure line is broken and, thus, the coolant reservoir needs to be pulled. also, this item (#12 on fiche), shows only for RHD. what up wit dat? can you guess how and where sunday will be spent?

got coolant reservoir out in 30 min. do all of these leak at the metal/plastic joint under the cap? my last one was warranty replaced for this reason and it's done it again and i am going to throw it back at the dealer.

Just for future reference... I just replaced my windshield washer pump... and you DON'T have to remove the coolant reservoir... in fact I recommend AGAINST doing it. There's an easier way. Jack the car's front end and slide underneath. You'll see that the pump is readily accessible from underneath. It just slides off those rubber "nipples" and comes right off... easy as pie. Getting it back on isn't too bad either - just helps to have someone shining light on it from above!

well, golly gee, it can be done. thanks. i'm so used to removing that coolant reservoir that i've got it down to 30 min. looked like a tight fit from below and that maybe the front of the exhaust should be lowered. hell, i didn't know what i was looking for so i simply removed the tank. it might help to put a little extra hose down there to aid in the alternative removal method. thanks again.
