Question Automatic Transmission - no drive gears

I purchased a '91 S4 last week after a separation period with an '84 to raise kids! Sadly, I broke it within the first hour of getting it home! Leaving an intersection, I stomped on the gas with the selector in "D". It took off, of course, but didn't upshift and revved up to 6000 at which point there was a snapping/bolt-breaking/rock- hitting-the-undercarriage kind of noise followed by either an upshift or a breakdown; either way the car lurched forward and faster as with an upshift. I immediately slowed down and, upon trying to accelerate again, discovered that I had no drive gears. The only selector position that works is "P" and there seems to be free-play in slapping the selectore through the other gears.

The car is resting peacefully at a reputable repair shop. They've ruled out the shift rod and will likely be pulling the tranny.

The curiousity (and wait!) is killing me. Can anyone help with a possible cause (other than driver stupidity) and cure?

Thanks

My guess is that you sheared the end off the drive shaft inside the torque tube.

If you're lucky, one of the half-shafts came disconnected from the transmission.

It's happened to me and others here and seems to jibe with your description.

Let us know what the verdict is.

It turned out to be the oil pump inside the transmission. The gear teeth broke off and the flying debris scored the torque converter a bit but the damage was isolated.

Thanks for everyone's help.
