Take apart the bulb control unit box. Inspect the circuit board for fried parts. Easy to do, you might find a culprit that way.

That's my planned next step at least, after I check marker light this morning. Original box had fried parts so that left tail and marker didn't work at all. The used replacement box I got may also have a problem...

This might sound silly, but my 86.5 had a similar ailment. Check your bulbs and see if one or more is a cheapo AutoZone type bulb and try replacing it with a German/Euro made bulb. That fixed mine. Sometimes the cheapo aftermarket bulbs will set off the warning light even if they're working. Must just be a tiny bit different construction or wattage.

Guys - don't go crazy here... check the bulbs and connections first before you start dissassembling things...!

As discussed in another recent thrad the tail lights and rear side markers are on the same circuit; if one of the sidemarker bulbs or grounds are not making good contact the warning light comes on........the passenger side marker is particularly bad for corrosion as dirt and water get trapped between the fuel tank and the rear fender.

As Alan said; don't take the engine out to solve this one.

My S4, MY 88 (EU model) from time to time has the brakes warning light that stays on even after I push he brake pedal. When this happens I also noticed that the AC doesn't work anymore (but the vent fan does), the headlamps do not pop up anymore and the cruisce control does not work amy more; usually if I switch of and on the engine it resets and all goes back to normal... any clue?
