Couple things I did. If 87 or newer, check to make sure front flaps are opening, I replaced the finned box up front( thanks to Dave at 928 Spec), then I disconnected the flaps for the summer. 2nd improvement came from unbolting the condesor and moving it forward and cleaning all the debris from in between the radiator and the condesor. I used a shop vac with a long extension, and long screw driver and also compressed air on the fins and water. Alot of crap came out!!! <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

ON ANOTHER VEHICLE...
CHANGED PUMP, THERMOSTAT, FLUIDS, AND CAP. PRESSURE WASHED RADIATOR FROM REAR TO FRONT, MUCH DIRT AND TRASH!
STILL OVERHEATING
REMOVED THERMOSTAT,
STILL HOT.
INSTALLED LOW PRESSURE BACK FLUSH KIT, ADDED CLEANER. STILL HOT
USED DESCALER STILL HOT
REPLACED RADIATOR.
RUNS ON COLD MARK

In 1986 I bought a Scirocco-
If you think I am scrawny now at 6'1" and 150 lb, then you'd be nervous like my mother back then. I was 40 lb lighter but the same height.
You tend to gain weight with age, yes...
Anyway, I quickly grew tired with the 90 HP. A Callaway Turbo version showed up for sale in a local paper, and though I couldn't buy it, I was hooked after test driving it.
A few years and 3-4 pounds later I purchased a turbo kit for this car. It wasn't intercooled, ran 7 pounds of boost, and made about 140 hp. It accerated like a bottle rocket, but ran very hot. I had to be way carefull if I didn't want it to overheat...
I decided to try Mecca/Evans Cooling, which uses a nearly pure propylene glycol formula, with additives. Supposedly it would cool the car much better; It didn't. PG has FAR less cooling capacity [specific heat] than ordinary water does, and my car quickly proved this by overheating. The unhappy part was how badly I was treated by that company...
In any case, I was expecting a special low-profile Scirocco radiator [built by a paint company!] to save the day.
When I bought my shark, there was a tiny coolant leak. I promptly bought a new radiator from Devek [Plastic is for SATURNS!] And threw away the Behr unit. I also changed the coolant. Judging by what drained out of the shark, it was the first time in many years that this little event had taken place...
I'd start here first~

Hi..
My Shark was running hot at freeway speeds. After 30 minutes or so of 70 to 80 MPH driving the needle would start to creep over the third line and very close to the red zone. Brad at Devek suggested that maybe my cooling flaps were loose and were closing at freeway speeds but I found a much easier to fix culprit. There are two plastic ducts that direct the air flow from the front opening of the Shark through the cooling flaps to the radiator. These plastic pieces had come loose in my car. I susposed what was happening was that these pieces of plastic would get blown up into the air passages at freeway speeds which starved the radiator for cooling air. I simply popped both these pieces back into place and now the needle stays below the third line. This weekend I think I'll buy some small, tapping screws so I can more securly anchor these plastic pieces in place. I popped them back in but they still look like they can come loose pretty easily.

I've got the only-heats-up-while-stuck-in-traffic thing (without the A/C on)....how do you put in new silicon? I've never looked at that fan before. It does work, but will new silicon get it to come on sooner?

Greg,
You said: We have changed IT ALL - Did you change the thermostat and the sealing ring in front of the thermostat?
The 928 cannot keep cold if the thermostat is not closing, because when the thermostat close (open) the cooling water is forced to go to the radiator to be cooled, if not, the cooling water just circulate in the engine, i.e. the engine run hot!
If not this, then tell me what you have changed

Big Dave,
I have both syringes and the Toyota oil for this project. I believe enough for 2 or more fan clutches. Perhaps we could get this done on both of ours soon. I have the thickest stuff 08816-10001.
It may or may not fix the problem, but chances are good it will help.
