Question Purolator Oil Filter

-I was in Pep-Boy's today

[buying injector cleaner for Lucy's Jeep, which I'm selling for her since she's out of the country]

Where I noticed a Purlator filter was listed for Porsche 928's. I looked on the shelf, and to my astonishment it was there! A first time for everything. I happened to have one of my MANN filters with me, since I was also looking for an engine oil filter kit [more on that later....], and was able to compare the two. The MANN filter appeared to be about an inch longer, and the cross-reference book attached to the shelf specifically said that numbers need to be "verified".

Has anyone used on of these? It was about $6, so it isn't any cheaper, but I remember a post a while back which dealt with oil filters and their performance. From what I remember, Purolator filters got a pretty good writeup...

Normy - BIGGER IS BETTER! (In this case...)

Stay with the MANN!

I had a Puro on a ski boat once...suffered an oil filter gasket failure...My ins co, paid the $6000+ engine replacement bill and 'subrogated' the claim against Purolator!

Slightly ot, but..filter co here had calls from GM factory re several newish cars having their oil filter gasket fail, and lose all their oil, lose engine nearly. After a hurried check, they upgraded the temp resistance of the gasket rubber/nitrile to cure the problem, but the basic cause was core shifting in the block casting producing local hot spots in some blocks. This was the 3.8l V6 unit.

I have a Purolator on my '83 right now that I installed soon after purchase when I flushed the oil. Haven't put many miles on it but I can vouch that it does fit and works. I will be replacing it with a Mann shortly.

With the price of the Mann filters being what they are from the BIG3, it makes no sense to not use them.
I remember seeing oil change receipts from the 2 PO's of my car where the oil filter was like 40.00!!!! Yeeessh!
Now I think you can grab them for like 6.00 a piece or around that. The last time I bought 4 of them and just keep them in my shop in ziplock bags waiting for their turn...

My reasoning is ......if the Mann (which is on my shark) is an inch or so longer. It has to be for a porsche engineering reason. (Volume of oil) Just because it fits, doesn't mean it works as well as the oem. Also, my PO had a Nissan (Maxima I beleive) or some other rice filter on my shark when I first got her. (He owns a Asian auto repair service) It fit the threads but was about 2 inches shorter than the OEM. Off it came the very same day.

Stay with the OEM filter.

Cool

But has anyone used a [short] Purolator filter for any extended period of time?

I found an external oil cooler kit today. And I bought it. And I installed it...

[I need to wait until the injectors get back from Michigan before I can see if it actually works]

The problem with this kit is that it involves a "sandwich plate". This thermostatic device sits between the block and the filter...and it is about 1 inch/2.5 cm wide. Which means the MANN filter sticks down too low...below the lowest points.

However...the Purolator filter, being shorter...fits just fine-

?

Why not relocate the filter. Hey relocate and use two!

I've used a few purolators. Picked them up in Pep Boys. Pretty amazed that they were there. I had just bought my 928, and I figured I stumbled onto a gold mine. Bought all that they had (3?). Figured that these HAD to be cheaper then buying from Porsche. Putting this into context, this was Summer of 1990 when I purchased my 928. Didn't much know of any self help groups back then.

So, I've used several. Changed oil and filter regularly. And the world is still revolving (and rotating) last time I looked up.

Yep, I do order Mann filters, several at a time, from 928Int'l now.

If you get the Mann filter from Jeannie, she tapes a new oil drain plug copper seal ring to each one. (Porsche says to replace the seal ring each time.)
