How much HP is just enough? Just like my salary goal, about 25-30% more than whatever I've got right now.
My car is a monster that I plan to tame on the track sometime in the next year or two. It does EXACTLY what I want it to do right now on the road. It pulls more than any car I've ever driven and I can control it perfectly in all road conditions at whatever (legal) speeds I want to do them.
Having said that, I think whoever you are, whatever car you're driving, if you're into cars, you always want just a leetle bit more .

I'm with the majority here, 400rwhp would about perfect...until I have it. Then I'll be thinking about 500rwhp. By the way, has anyone here been able to get 400 from a 16v US car, without nitrous? That's my personal goal and once tax season is over and my bonus is in I'll be able to start the project. Meanwhile I'm getting everything else ready for it.

You know Ed...I think the first thing you should do is to lighten your car as much as you can (all dependent on comfort level)...get rid of the AC and rear A/C..replace heavy stock seats with lightweight seats. Pull out all the underpadding etc etc...go as far as you feel you want. That alone will improve response. Then go after more stock power..x pipe, sharktuned chips..etc...These are cheap and really make the 928 more responsive. I feel in that form the 928 retains it's factory feel, but makes it snappier... Of course the next step if that's not enough is to go with more....see where this is going?..more more..LOL.. Just sell everything and buy an Aerial Atom...gonna be hard to beat that for power and weight.... Good luck in whatever you decide
Right now I'm thinking mainly street driving, occaisional track days/DE's.
More track time then that, and I think I should buy one of the occaisional track 928's that pop up, or build one from something way more ratty then mine, but basically in one piece.
Then, there's Rod selling his really nice S4 auto - oh man, that would make a sweet daily driver commuter mobile.
Not to mention I sold my dirt bike this summer and now I'm jonesing to get another one.
I really gotta get a grip here...

I see a pattern building here of either around 400 rw hp is a real nice sweet spot, and on the other hand, whatever you have, you will eventally get used to it and will want more. Ha ha...

I think we all agree that more is better, but the question is, how much for the 928. all things considered, i wouldnt want 800hp if the first time i shift from 2nd to 3rd, i pull all the teeth off 3rd gear!!!!!
so i guess the question would be, what would be the desired HP if all the components could handld the hp. if the question is how much do you want in you 928 with a stock transmission. I would say, 400 to 440rwhp. that would get the job done and do it for a long time. even still i think i would be doing things to save the transmission. (ie shifting style, application of throttle, etc)

I will venture into this with the following story:
My 600 Cummins (in my Peterbilt) is by far the most potent diesel engine I've had to date. It's last dyno put 627 on the ground (mind you, this engine is rated 625 @ 2100 at the flywheel).
Could I use more? You bet. Do I want more? Of course I do.
So, to answer the question about the 928.....

For a street car I believe the HP should be low enough to drive it comfortably on a wet road (for those of us who live in places where rain can be an issue or a surprise). This probably means that manual cars can have more HP as they are easier to gentle away from a standstill on a wet road than an auto. It is embarrassing when the lights turn to green & you just sit there with your rear wheels spinning.
High HP cars like the turbo's of 20 years ago were frightening on wet roads.

This is definitely one of those questions without an answer, because the number is going to be different for everybody, and will even change for the same person in the same car. There are people who think the horsepower of the stock car are already more than enough, then there are those who aren't happy with 500+ rwhp and want more yet.

True. I do think there is a structural limit of both components and chassis design that is reached near 450rwhp, based on what we have seen. however, if someone really likes the seat of the pants acceleration at 100mph going to 150mph, then 1000hp is the answer.
