Broken Parts...Can you guess?

probably not, as the miracle amsoil coating would protect valve springs from breaking
i think the oil galley holes are large enough for the things in the valve train to drop right down into the pan. on the S4 they are huge. im still looking for my digital caliper battery cover that is floating in the engine somewhere since i first used it!

JIM!!!...now that's just not fair...since I ordered the springs from you. Dang...you spoiled the fun!
Yes..since the flippin cats out of the bag now... Machinist told me one of the exhaust valves had a broken spring and the guide was worn out because of it. In the OB, it seems pretty easy for the pieces to just wash down through the oil passages and into the pan. Lucky, YES! as it could have easily fell through the valve. I suspect this happened well before I got the car.
I should have the reconditioned heads back today.
...so much for a fun game.

I play to WIN even without the insider information I had that one. Mark guessed it too and he did not know you got springs from us !!

thats because as I was testing scots valves with the clayed pistons, i broke one of he spring and this is just what it looked like, but smaller (the inner spring)
those oil holes are big, but the valves spring couldnt go through the valves into the engine, its proteced by a little tiny hole called the valve guide (nothing but oil can fit through it!!! )

Having found broken rocker arm bits in a 911 engine case on more than one ocassion I know how parts can migrate ! Broken piston parts can fly over into other cylinders as well , amazing what happens at 9,500 RPM or so when all Hell breaks loose.

It started with this worn bolt....
I reveiwed some evidence from a steam turbine 'failure' last year, which ended up with BIG turbine and generator parts scattered all over creation in a power plant. Everything was doing OK, except for that pesky alarm about high water level in the turbine condenser. Silenct that damn thing... Lots of inertia, just like in a car engine.
One little thing lets go, and the rest of the stuff doesn't really want to stop spinning quite yet. You'd think that a seized rod bearing would stop the crank from turning, but nooooo.... Rod bends in sympathy, piston breaks since it's at the wrong angle now but still gets pulled into the spinning crank. Piston bits get scattered, more things try to stop but can't. Until one little piece gets up into the top of the head, and wedges into a valve spring. Cam comes down and the spring breaks. That's the piece you found.
Keith, you should be happy you were able to shortcut all the carnage, and cut directly to the valve spring failure without the normal excitement.

TOO LATE!
Dang! I was going to say 'busted belly button ring'. . .
I've taken a LOT of things out of a LOT of patients from a LOT of different places!
Maybe 'peeps' should have 'belly pans!'
Speedy Repairs, Keith!
