I emailed the owner for some information. I thought I might be interested.
The VIN is WPOZZZ92ZGS841203 I believe the ZZZ means it is a ROW/Euro and GS means it is an 86, right? I thought the 84 should be 86 though, but perhaps as a Euro that would be a different code?
The owner is not a car guy. He bought it from a friend and says it is titled as an 87. He seems like a good guy, but not knowledgeable about 928s.
I asked for a photo of the motor and will post it when he sends it. His new asking price is $15k. I suggest a much lower value but recognize that someone else might value it more than I.

Race Car
I would be curious to know if this an S2 (310hp) or an S3 (DOHC 32V, 288hp, the Euro version of the 86.5 as you call it) and who made the conversion as it seems to have been made in Germany.

You are right, this is a 86 S ROW VIN.

I know this car...and drove it. It's NOT an 86. Questionable paperwork is all I'm going to say. The owner at the time (possibly previous to this one) thought it was one of only 5 cars ever "upgraded to 8 cylinders in Germany". He asked $35,000 for it when I saw it 6 years ago. Poor guy was told a lot of fluff...or may be he was just trying to make a sale. I believe it was a little bit of both. Nice guy though, and in definite need for an eye opening education/experience.
The car needed work. A LOT of work. Being a convertible owner myself, I can attest that this is not one of the finer examples. It also does not have the body reinforcements necessary for the conversion.
My guess is 78 euro or '79-80 US. He gave me stories about the title at the time and I lost interest before getting that far in my inquiry anyway
just my 2 cents

The 4 in the vin is Euro/ROW all the USA spec have a 6 after the 8 in the vin is 1986 model would have S-4 brakes and suspension most likely is a 16 valve Euro S engine very few Euro "green" 32 valve engines were sold.

That is what I thought, it could be an interesting rare car, but almost certainly is a money pit

Maybe the engine is rare in the states, but if the reinforcing is crap, this car is a parts car. Besides, 10 more HP is easily obtainable with so much less money on a 4.7L
