VA CArs in storage?
What do you Virginia folks do about cars undergoing restoration? I carried only comp on my 914 in Idaho in case my house burned up with it in it. When I asked about that here, they wouldn't let me. As a result, my 914 - with no engine - has the highest cost of all my cars. Why??? How do I get around this? My 928 is still in storage in IDaho and I'm paying liability on it! It doesn't make any sense!

I would check online at the VA registry to determine if their are laws preventing you from taking liability off. I've always done this in NY and MA during the winters with no problem and it reduces the cost by 1/3.

During resto, I drop plates, then insurance. So far, VA has adopted no crazy taxes or penalties for taking a car off the road for a while, then putting it back on road at a later date.

My agent seemed oblivious here. My 914 does not have current registration, nor will it until the resto is done. I don't want to completely drop insurance, because most homeowners policies specifically exclude pretty much anything with a motor in case of damage. I wanted it covered in case my house fell on it or something.

I have 2 in-op cars undergoing work that are in storage.Neither has been tagged in years. I have them on a collector car policy that also has my 3 other "collector" car vehicles on it.Its about 50 bucks a year each for a stated valve comp policy on these vehicles

My sisters house burn down 2 months ago. The weekend of Thanksgiving. They got home, parked the van in the garage next to his insured Mazda 929 (actually low miles, well maintained date-night car). Their other car was in the driveway. The van's battery caught fire. Burned the house down and the car in the driveway too. THANK GOD the whole family got out!! The insurance replaced the van and said the other two cars were not liable for damage due to this being an "accident". They got NOTHING from USAA for the other two vehicles!! They are now in court with GM and had to buy a beater to get around without a house!
Dont believe insurance companies are here to "cover" your vehicles!! Lesson learned here.

I'll be the first to say 'Dude ... it's a 914'
Don't be a hater, I owned a 73 2.0 that I restored from the ground up and spent a gazillion dollars on. I actually like 914's

I don't want to end up like Beerfish's family there. Gotta have something - and have to read the find print.
I like having both the 914 and 928. Different ends of the spectrum.
