Possible old topic (but read it anyway)
Yes Rayn P, I DID do a search for this topic here. Anyhoo, I found this on landsharkoz.com, an old comment from the heas of Porsche Cars Australia from 1986:
"Anyone who wants a manual 928 is a dill" says Porsche Cars Australia boss Alan Hamilton with typical candour. The 928 has always been a car admirably suited to its four speed automatic transmission-
There was also a Top Ten list somewhere of "The worst manual boxes ever" that included the 928! Now granted this comment was made 22 years ago, however it was well after the 1985 MY Borg-Warner synchromesh design was in place. I could understand if he was only refering to the early boxes.
(WARNING: Nostalgic Personal Anecdote approaching) In my first 928 (81 5-speed, 100k mi.) you HAD to double-clutch it with proficiency to downshift or else it would rip some serious flatulant noises. Despite that I still loved the was the shifter felt. At the time (1991-94) my dad and I did a lot of events with the San Antonio P Club. The only other 928er in the club was a real funny guy named Dan Carmen (anyone? anyone?) who had a blue 85 manual and was probably my favorite person in the world at the time (I was 16). The point I'm slowly arriving at is that when I would ride in his car he would show off by effortlessly downshifting into 1st gear at 50mph, psychically knowing how much it irritated me that he could. Now that I finally have my own 5-speed S4 I am wondering more than ever "What planet are all those people from?", I mean HELLOOOOO driven any 911's from that time period? My dad's car was a 911SC and I am still mystified as to what he found so lovable about that car. It had the most limp-dick shifter I have ever come across and the clutch required at least 80lbs. of pressure to fully engage it. Can anyone here help me understand this lunacy? I mean surely if there was a high performance car who's box was worthy of being a "museum piece" as Eddy (http://www.landsharkoz.com/tt/ttmanvsaut.htm) said of the 928, surely it was the 911's.
I don't mean to start another flame war , I just want to understand from where and what reason are these asinine opinions perpetuated?

The guy who ran the official Porsche importer in Switzerland did not believe in manual 928s so the only manual 928s here are either grey imports or, like mine, were orderd direct on the factory & collected from the factory.

i dont think the 928 5 speed trans is very good. It dosent exactly shift smoothly, but it does handle quite allot of torque.
The knock on it always was the dogleg pattern. I am indifferent to it honestly. Sometimes i like it, sometimes i dont care. It is what is it, but thats always mentioned in articles about the car

Its the porcupine ****** that killed the 928. Its the porcupine ****** who force untested vehicles (Cayennes) onto the public.
