87 S4 vs 90 or so Supra turbo
I had a chance to tangle with one of these today on a "closed course"
We each did a run from 80 to approx 145, straight line. My guess, based on how the Supra hung on to me from 80 to 120 was that it must have been chipped because we were dead even both times . Once we hit 120 he started loosing ground, I was at redline in 3rd so hit 4th (my car is an auto) and I proceded to move away. He had the obligatory "fart can" exhaust and the car was lowered, I'm assuming it had some sort of engine mods.
Looks like my next step is an x-pipe

Those cars are fast stock. Hard to find one these days that hasn't been modified but they should give a good run. You do mean it was the twin turbo model, right?
EDIT! Just saw your picture. I was referrign to later year car.

Art,that is a MK3 Supra. You can bet your paycheck it was wound up far from stock. I happen to know a little about these things as one of my associates professionally builds these things(mainly MK4's). If that car was stock it would have totally ran out of top end at 130 and would have been gasping by 110. We have one at the shop right now that will run 10's. The stock ones run near low 15's or so with a good driver, high 15's without. Problem is it's hard to tell when their stock.

I think this Gen turbo supra came stock with 230hp....in a fairly heavy car....about 3500lbs...... of course this is basically the same motor that regualrly makes well over 1000hp in the later supras.....early ones can make the same power.... So in a straight line they can be very fast.....a newer one won the Texas Mile last year at over 228mph!!!
Make the supra turn a couple times and you'll be GONE..... Ever wonder why you never see Supras on the racetrack...only the dragstrip....... simple they overheat quickly and don't handle all that well

Based on Wikipedia, the Supra is not much slower than an S4...6.2 0-60...14.7 1/4 time and a top end of 156.....stock S4 is about 14 seconds in the quarter...so you are talking about 8-10 car lengths to 100 mph from a start...Wikipedia states it has an extremely restrictive exhaust...so if it had a coffee can out the back...it probably would explain the close run....

Those square boxes are BUTT UGLY!. Now , on the other hand... Back in 95, I drove a Twin- Turbo Supra (340 HP- IIRC) That was the fastest and most exciting car I've driven- Not to mention Beautiful as Hell.
Road & Track classed them in the Supercar league of the day- along with Ferraris, and Lotuses. There is a black one I see locally which just gives me wood! ALL BLACK - PERFACT PAINT, KICKASS WHEELS, LOWERED SUSPENSION, NASTY EXHAUST, etc., etc. Also a very Sharp, updated 300 ZX locally which is Mean! My favorite Local car, though, is a Black V-8 Lotus Esprit- AWESOME ( not the earlier high- strung Turbo 4 cyl's.)

crank walk crank walk lol.
haha couldn't resist, these cars (either this mrk or the next) were pretty famous for having the crank eat the block, basically TBF.

I raced an MK3 Supra like the one pictured in my '83 S. Was from about 70 ---> on the highway late at night not much traffic. Looked like he had some exhaust mods, he had passenger and I didn't. Close race but I pulled on him a bit. Then we cruised together high speed until his exit, waved to each other. I would think an S4 would drop him fast, but then it all comes down to the mods, drivers etc.

Mk4 is the way to go. Panzer is right on. IMHO, huge difference in the Mk3 and Mk4 (can't even compare the looks).
The Mk2, on the other hand, although only ~145hp, was a milestone japanese GT with the best motor Toyota ever built... the silky smooth 5MGE.
I got an '84 non-sunroof S model back in '87 and it's still in the family with over 250K+ miles and still silky smooth.

My mechanic is a supra fan with a fairly recent model, the Mk4 i guess, and his co mechanic is an german ex Audi and Ferrari mechanic who has just bought a supra and says they are every bit as fast as most Ferrari's he has worked on. Also can't beat that Toyota reliability. Don't really like the styling though and not much space, but a great performer all the same.

I used to be all over these type of cars ofter owning a few in its class. (Rx-7 NA's and turbo II's, 300ZX's, 280Z's) The Supra was a great car with a strong engine just like the Z cars VG30 etc. But they were HEAVY and under powered until the MK4 (twin turbo model) which holds its value very well. i think the supra and the 928 have a lot in common......large and comfortable.
