Post In search of a new windshield!!

While I was about 50 miles from home yesterday running an errand I inadvertently locked myself out of the car, after waiting a few hours for a friend to try find the spare key at my house, to no avail, I put a hammer through the middle of it and used a hanger to hook the keys and pull them out of the ignition and through the hole...ok I'm in. I broke the windshield because it was sand pitted and had a small chip in it and I was going to replace it soon anyway, the problem is I can't find anybody who can get it, other then the dealer with a list price of $950 and my cost being a PCA member of $750, and this is not including the labor to install it. Does anybody of another option? I've checked the archives and called the companies recommended and they all say it is now a dealer only item. And I thought putting the hammer through the windshield was going to be the hardest part!

Eric-

You might try a search on the rennlist email list archives about windshield replacements. I've read a few threads about this in the past.

FWIW -

Tip here for anyone who has this happen to them - you can access the car using this method with no damage to the car and recover from the event.

Last year at SITM - Larry Ware's 82 Shark decided to lock itself while at a Car Wash bay with the keys in the ignition and no spare set available to unlock the car. We used 2 small standard screwdrivers to carefully remove the trim and the rear quarter window from the passenger side to gain access to the car. Took about 30 minutes or so. Larry drove his car to the paddock area in the park where we re-installed the window in about 45 minutes.

jay, was that 1/4 window cemented into the moulding or was it an original factory install with no cement? i've also heard of someone else removing the 1/4 to gain access but it was no 45 min event.

Eric,
On the upside you did have the forethought not to
use a crowbar on the sunroof , yuk, yuk, yuk,...Hey, Moe!
Merde happens...
I guess most of us would be in cuffs if we saw someone ventilating OUR windshields .
I know you felt it had to be done, but, it is a head shaker guy.
Sometimes honesty is NOT the best policy if you catch my drift...
Anyhow its water over the dam or is that glass shards under the console?
Hey, the green tints 78-84'- might fit(?) are running $495.00 and the shields with antenna are running $695.00 at 928 INT'L. When I visited them last year they also had a rack or three of used glass. I think they are open at least for the AM on Saturdays.

or try Devek.
Dozman and some others are parting out and may have the goods.
Good luck though as it is a holiday weekend.
Enjoy the low parasitic drag A/C in the meantime.

Snow, He could have defrayed the cost if he had sold $1.00 raffle tickets and let the public whack away with a telescoping antenna.

I recently had my windshield replaced. It broke when attempting to remove and reinstallit because of a leak. The installer gave me a real brake and only charged me $300.00 for the glass (the one with antenna) and $50.00 to put it in. Now bare in mind he gave me a brake because my windshield broke when he reseald it, but his prices sound much better then the numbers you are talking about. Here the contact info:
3D AUTO GLASS (954) 341-7995 (Drew)

CORAL SPRINGS , FL 33071

Sab.

Eric,

Gives new meaning to "put the hammer down!"

When you find a good source, will you please post the info. If I paint my car this winter, I'm probably going to replace my windshield.

Snowy-

As far as I know - no cement was used. The moudling came out fairly easily - it was the glass and moving the seal up over the edge that was the most difficult. Fortunately we were successful.

Jay,
The archives are the first place I looked, Vistar/ safelite actually said they had the glass, could install it with new molding for $459, and made an appointment and then an hour before it called me to say it's no longer available. I called a few other local glass shops with the same response.

John,
If at all possible I want to go with a new one; I hated the way the sun reflected in the sand pitting.

Sab,
I read your thread, great deal from where I stand; I'll call 3D Auto Glass on Tuesday to see if they can do anything for me.

Greg,
I will post any valuable info. I come across.

Auto Glass America promised they could take care of me for a reasonable price....we'll see Tuesday. When I pull up to the Banner Elk Holiday Inn in NC on the 13th and you say to yourself, wow that new windshield is clear, look again there might not be one in there.......now where did I leave those old aviation goggles!
