Sending a Porsche to Germany?
I know it sounds crazy...
The guy that wants to buy the '78 Euro wants to take it to Germany.
To me it would be like sneding Ice Cubes to Alaska...
However - I once sold a TR6 that was shipped back to England after I did a restore and the Gent was happy.
How many older Euro's are in Europe and what are the prices.
The person who wants to bring the 928 back is in the Airforce - shipping is free - but - He was also my driver in the department and I don't want to see him waste his money............
What is the value of a '78 Euro 5 spd w/ 110,000 miles (har har) in Germany?
I'm sure there is probably a better vehicle for him to bring - Like a 4 wheel drive truck or something? He's headed over in the next 2 months - Idea's anyone?

Even though he can get it shipped for "free", he could nearly buy a Euro in Europe for what it would probably cost the rest of us to ship it, shove it through Customs, register it, etc......
He could buy yours and leave it here for when he comes home on leave, and buy one in Germany to use there. When he's done with his tour over there, just sell it and come home to "yours".......

Michael -
I've been in the AF 27 years and have moved a lot. Shipping old cars to Germany and Japan is tuff; very strict inspections--no drips, smog/emissions, etc. Shipping to Guam, England, etc--no problem. Unless it's in very good condition, it may find its way to the impound lot at port and then cost a fortune in Euros to get it fixed and released. Unless he's doing a short-tour (unlikely in Germany), storage will not be at govt expense. Family/friends would probably enjoy car-sitting for a couple years... PM me if you want more info; I have friends stationed at Ramstein who he can talk to. / Bruce

Will the car be registered in Germany? If so, the earliest models can now be registered as historic vehicles, providing they are in original condition (no mods = no tax).

I may be missing something here, but unless the car is in particulary bad shape, I don't see it being much of an issue.
If it's free, he's likely shipping it with gov't contract shipping, and they take care of all the customs stuff.
While he's there, he'll get it inspected and registered on base... piece of cake.
He'll have a blast with it over there. I would have preferred a 928 to my 911 during my three years in Stuttgart.

Nicole,
I was at Patch Barracks from Jan 03 - Jan 06 at EUCOM HQ.
We lived in a nice town called Weil im Schönbuch, which is between Böblingen and Tübingen. It was a great experience. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Where's Nellingen Bks?

Oh, I see... Patch Barracks are on the Western side of Vaihingen, not too far from the University, and very close to the Autobahn A8.
Nellingen Barracks is now a civil part of the city of Ostfildern, called "Scharnhauser Park". I don't remember when the Barracks were closed; it was some time in the mid or late 1990ies. Since then they have built a tremendous number of condos and townhomes there; some are pretty nice, but most are pretty boring in my book. For some reason, this area became very popular among immigrants - I have no idea why.
I moved away (to CA) 10 years before you got there...
Glad you had a great time! I fled from the cold winter weather - hated it! Even Northern California is too cold for me these days!

One of our customers took his three 928s to Germany including a GTS. The older cars although extremely well maintained had some difficulties passing the roadworthyness inspections. The European standards are much higher than any in the USA.

THANK YOU!
I showed him the responces - he still wants to buy the car. He'll probably leave it at his Father's house.
So - He wants to know if there is anything - vehicle wise - that he could bring and trade for a Porsche? 2007 4x4 pickemup truck anyone?
And thank you very much for the responces - It's extremely nice to have friends who I can ask dumb questions.......
