Shoulder harness mounts ?
 

Greetings,

Has anyone had any experience with the DEVEK shoulder harness mounts that go onto the rear shock towers ? I would like to get a different set of belts (longer, actually... don't ask), but do not want to go for an entire roll bar. I would really like a harness mount bar like they make for the 911 series. I was thinking of purchasing the DEVEK shoulder harness mounting kit and then going for either a Sparco or Simspon shoulder harness (Y-setup) and a new lap belt also. Right now, the stock belt is kind-of tight... if you know what I mean. If I could buy or have a longer seat-belt made, that would be ideal.

The Devek harness mounts are very nice...a five minute install and very solid. I made a slit in the rear carpet to allow it to extend through, so it looks like the car came with it.
A word of warning, though: dealing with a five point harness on a daily basis is a pain, not to mention that you look like a yahoo when you go to a drive up window. I use mine (with a track seat)only for track events, then revert back to the standard belt and seat for those long days between track events.

Do you take out the stock seat with the mounting rails and all, or do you mount the track seat to the stock mounting rails?

I remove the stock, power seats with the rails, and mount the track seat directly to the existing holes. BTW, removing the seat disables the power mirrors on my '89 S4.

You're right, I never thought of that. I already look enough like a dumbsh*t anyway. The harness may be a bit too much. Can I leave my blower sticking up through my hood though ? What was I thinking ?!?

Funny you should mention that power mirror thing. Mine did the same thing when I removed the seats, sold them, and installed Cobras. I have found that the wiring for the mirror goes through a loop that involved a circuit through the seat motors, and then through the memory buttons in the door. What I will be doing is finding a 12 source to wire each side mirror to so that they will work again, but that will coincide when I take apart the rest of my interior to replace the window regs, the tan carpet (for a dark grey blue <a href="http://www.gahh.com" target="_blank">www.gahh.com</a> ) and redo the speaker wiring - so I haven't done that yet. Somehwhat simple, somehwhat not - I got quite a bit fo help from this forum and the email lists.

Ona side note, I find that my cobra suzuka (and imola on the pass. side) are MORE comfortable than the original seats. I purchased the extra wide ones, but these are non-adjustable comp. seats.

Is the power mirror circuit the same for pre-S4 cars? My "new" 84 w/ non-power seats don't have working power mirrors either.

I'm not sure. On my car, there's a power cable under the seat that you have to disconnect to remove the seat (or get a VERY long extension cord :) ). Apparently the power for the mirrors and memory module goes from that cable, through the seat and back again through the cable. Thus removing the seat interrupts this circuit. I've gotten advise about short circuiting this problem by putting wires between pins on the connector, but not being sure exactly which pins need to be connected, and not wanting to fry an expensive Porsche electrical part, I haven't tried it.

I just did that in my car as well, A BIG PITA to do, but well worth the effort. I went to the extreme and damn near removed every ounce of that old factory glue. My finger prints have only just reappeared LOL

FYI..you dont have to limit your self to a stock 928 color with the carpet from GAHH. They will do what ever color you want in a 928 pattern. I did Graphite Grey. I later got a set of Loyyd Mats made to match via Tom at 928intl. Again, a non 928 color but on a 928 pattern.

When you figure out the mirror switch let me know as ive just replaced my stock seats as well. At this point i just set the mirrors and forget about it. The side mirrors on the s4 are useless anway IMHO but it would be nice to adjust them after you wash the car and get back in to see them out of wack.
