Shark Bites 996
Driving home last night, I was challenged by the driver of a blue 996. We went hit it from various speeds, 1st, 2nd, and third gear. Even once in a big sweeper. All results the same. My 14 year old shark drove away from, around and past the extremely annoyed driver of this 996. He's probably trying to rub the teeth marks out as we speak.

Carlos!
You made my day. Since getting my first shark in March of this year, I have been quick to remind everyone that not all Porsches are 928s ... they just WANT to be!

Carlos,
A while back here in Dallas I had a similar encounter coming out of a toll booth. There was a new 996 with a big fancy wing and other body mods, big wheels etc. The guy driving probably didn't even know that 928s exist (like the Boxster owners). I could see him looking at me and he took off. I pulled in behind him and just stuck on his bumper as he tried to get away. He kept looking in the mirror probably trying to figure out what I was driving. They now have the same problem we have - WEIGHT!

Thanks Patrick, Uboat, The best part is that all of these "purists" sneer with disdain at the drivers of Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, etc. They talk about how to go about it on the board. They ought to continue the practice because any of many of those cars will hand their *** to them. This guy pulls out of like & whips up behind me as we are hitting an entrance ramp when we get clear of traffic, we both go. By second gear he's two car legnths back. He lets off, pulls alongside again talking and gesturing wildly. I say just go! He does. I drill him again. Once it's obvious, he lets off. We get to a red light. I'm behind him in the left lane. He goes. As soon as I get clear of traffic, I pull to the right and drive by. He lets off. We get to a big 2 lane sweeper onto a bridgehere he goes again. I take the outside. He dives to the inside like he's coming by but when we straighten out, again he's history. When I take my exit, he pulls alongside yelling & waving wildly, then stands on it and blaizes off. My car is not fast by my standards. According to my friends who own or have owned 928s, mine is above average. But I was surprised at how easy this 996 was to abuse.
PS I bet this doesn't get me any stars from the 5 star mob.

My only comment to anyone who is doing what can be considered "street racing" is: don't.
Save it for the track or autocross. Safety is more important than speed. Streets and highways are not designed as "safe" race tracks. Even race tracks require corner workers to optimize safety. On the street, there are no corner workers. Well, perhaps, but they are called cops, and they are not there to allow you to go as fast as you want.

My glee at Carlos' experience notwithtanding, Ed makes a good point. My street "racing" is limited to occasionally punching it on an on ramp when one of those other "performance cars" insists on flexing its muscle by refusing to slow down(and then speed up) to let me merge. I must admit to taking some pleasure in letting them know that the decision to merge before or after them is mine, not theirs.

Beats me Dan. The guy instigates this deal then starts waving his arms and yelling like his Prozac had been stolen.
Maybe he was saying "Do you know how much I paid for this thing, how dare you run by me like that".

The other night I had a Trans Am try to take me on. I got stuck behind this small bus and the TA flew by. No prob. It was just a little past dusk and I didn't have the headlights on, only the fog lights. As I charged up behind him I turned the **** and the lights came up. Bamm! The shark was locked on its prey. As I punched it and began to leave him behind there was a cop up ahead. I hit the brakes and thankfully didn't get nabbed.

Kinda reminds me of our trip to SITM a few weeks back.
Driving along I-40 on the way there, just about to Nashville when this new Monte Carlo gets behind me on 4 lanes going through the city. When I say new - I mean so new the sticker is in the window and no permanent tag yet.
After we get through Nashville heading east, he decides to 'flex his muscle'. I can tell you that the Monte Carlo is limited to ~130 - and their acceleration isn't near what we have! We played tag almost to Knoxville - he flashed his lights as he exited and we rolled down the windows - he said something along the lines of 'what the he!! are you driving?, that's is FAST'.
Needless to say, the rest of the trip I was gloating....

Jay,
Why would you waste your time telling us about a Monte Carlo? Did you play with the Buick Skylark as well and I bet the guy in the Pinto was impressed too?
Just Kidding,
Jim

Carlos,
It does not take a genius to know that a modifyed 928S4 can take a stock 996.The 928 was a disaster from day one.Extreem front tire wear, brake wear, oil leaks, a/c, control unit etc. 928 have have not been in racing because they are overweight DYNOSOURS.

Racing 928s was not factory supported, but privateers have gone on the do so. Some have had limited success. Kim Crumb has done amazing things with his (basically) stock 928GT. He's set track records at Brainard for un-modified Porsches. He's won hill climbs against all others, including 996s and Turbos.
Mark Anderson is competing in the Speedvision GT series as a private entry. He's doing fairly well considering that he's not getting any significant sponsorship, and is doing it on a shoe-string budget. BTW, his 928 weighs about 2500 pounds and is probably putting out close to 500 HP, so I would not say it's a Dinosour.
By all means, enjoy your 911 whatever its vintage. Just don't come over onto the 928 BBS and think you can put down 928s without a verbal fight.
Although I'm not anywhere near the league of Kim Crumb or Mark Anderson, I've done enough DE and Autocross events to say and show that the 928 holds its own quite nicely. At DE events, I very rarely get passed by a stock 911. It is usually me, in a stock 928GT, who is passing them. Likewise, when my head is screwed on correctly, I'm usually a bit faster than the majority autocrossing 911s.

If you think about it then, about street racing....why do any of you have porsches if you just drive them slow and safe? why not have a deisal rabbit ?
Or maybe somethign more reliable but really slow and good milage, maybe a CRX.
