Wheel Restoration/Replacement
My 82 Phone Dials have seen their day! I am considering painting them with a good quality high metallic silver acrylic lacquer paint with perhaps a clear lacquer top coat. Any suggestions on prep or anything else I should be aware of with these wheels before I begin? - more -
As another option, I'm considering an inexpensive set of aftermarket wheels (since 15" tires are becoming more and more limited). I've looked at some U.S brands (American Racing, Centerline, etc) but Porsche is generally not listed. Does anyone know whether wheels of this type will fit an 82? (not really interested in used Porsche wheels)
As you can see, I'm looking for a very reasonable way to deal with this wheel thing. Thanks!

I was able to polish out and bring back the shine on mine when I also thought they were over the hill. I got a 3" buffing pad (actually 2 of them) and via washers compressed them together and put them in my die grinder. I then used some 3M polishing and waxing compound and viola shiny rims. Took about 90 minutes per wheel off the car and on my work bench to accomplish. Good Luck

If you refinish your wheels use a good etching primer made for aluminum and then use a basecoat clearcoat paint like chromabase/ chromaclear or generic. They should last a long time. I hit this point a few years ago, along with needing new tires too. I called up the local Porsche dealer to see if he had any take offs. He had some brand new twisted 17" boxter take offs that I guy had put custom wheels on. I gave him $1k, they really updated my '79 for not much more than the new set of tires would have cost.
