yeah Jim---that's another important thing to consider.

I think we can all agree that cooler air results in more dense air, giving more power.

Carl's always coming up it some impressive stuff, but I would still like to see the data on temps----with or without coolers----just for our general knowledge base. I think it would help immensely.

putting that info together with the needs of a specific engine could determine which, if any, type and size cooler is needed.

Heck, I'd just like to have a fish in this hole, but I'm too busy trying to get an engine built and body work started......

Just a little levity...

There are certain arguements that have no end. I like to call them "bar-stool arguements" because you can usually argue either side ad libitum as long as the bartender still pours the drinks.

My current list of bar-stool arguements:

Which is hotter, a hot blonde or a hot brunette?
Which is better, supercharger or turbocharger?
Which is better, ait-to-air or air-to-water intercooler?
Which is better, twin-screw or centrifugal supercharger?
Which is better, Stroker or Boosted?
Which is better, "Caddyshack" or "Animal House"?

PS: I think a hot brunette is hotter than a hot blonde...

Co2 cooling an intercooler is a waste if you ask me. Its trying to cool the intake charge temp by blowing a cool jet onto the exterior of an air to air intercooler. That is just BS garbage if you ask me. I think those kits cost more than nitrous, the Co2 is expensive for hat it does and you then have to carry around another compressed bottle.

I've thought about putting dry ice in the intercooler reservoir. Does that
count?

George
Just spray nitrous directly on the intercooler!!! All the ricers do it!!

In all my readings here and elsewhere, no one has come up with those numbers. Even the "ricers" don't have that data......
That opens up yet another can of worms - what is the ideal temperature? I know tuners who shoot for a certain number, anything higher is "danger zone" while other tuners are not happy until almost reaching ambient. Neither method is right or wrong. One thing I can tell you is people who tune with the second mentality on average make more power and destroy less engines (if any at all).
IMO heat is the #1 enemy for a boosted car (well any car, that much more important while under boost).

I have been (so have others I work with) monitoring intake air temp for a while now. So yes, I’m speaking from experience. Not just on 928’s either, but a few other boosted cars.

It will still be a matter of opinion weather or not the IC is really needed, regardless of the test data. There are plenty of non-IC boosted 928’s running around with no issues (all low boost that I know of). So it’s obvious that an IC is not 100% necessary under these conditions.
I could care less what type of boost you are running, without an intercooler the intake air will be hotter than the air going into a N/A motor. No barstool racing here, it's 100% fact I've seen proven multiple times on the dyno. Even at 3-4psi the intake air charge is rising a significant amount.

Yep... whenever you compress a gas, you will generate heat.

If you need any more poof, just grab a hold of the discharge line on any shop air compressor....

Poof! Are you saying that's the sound it will make?

You can learn a lot by touching the finned cylinder on a running compressor as well
