Yes, I've got the S4 suspension and brakes in my Euro 928. The E55 is very agile and is very similar in weight to an S4/GTS. The newer ones don't handle as well but still handle very good. If you mod the suspension on the 928, it will perform significantly better than the E55 but stock to stock they are very close with a slight edge to the 928. However, the 210 E55 is quicker than a stock S4/GTS but the 211 E55 will blow the doors off a stock 928. Some stock 211 E55's are running in the 11's stock all the way down to the stock Continentals while the 210 E55's run low to mid 13's stock.

previous generation E55's are around 3600 to 3700 pounds, but the newest ones are well over 4000.

I still admire the e55's from the ~2000 model year era. Huge V8, stealth styling, and the thing was actually slightly _lighter_ than the base model.

I have come upon a couple of great deals: 2000 AMG E55 and a very nice Guards Red/Black 1991 928S4 (Devek maintained,Documented,Great Price, etc). I have two kids (6 and 4) who would fit nicely in a 928s4 but the E55 is quite impressive in performance and space. I have owned a 90 S4 which I sold when my first child was tiny(infant - rear facing seat). Now that the kids are toddler + sizes I've started shopping for a 928S4/GT but as different as the E55 is (read sedan) I can't help but think that the E55 might be a better bargain. I have owned many p-cars and an AMG car (914, 911SC,951S,968Cab,928s4,AMG C36,BMW M6, ALFA 164Q).

I'm not afraid of wrenching and in fact I prefer it but I can only choose one. So for the owners of both out there, which one would you recommend to someone who takes the long road even with a 6 and 4 year old?

Somebody please talk me out of the E55!

A Tormented Michael
Without a doubt buy the AMG, E55 AMG (1999-2002) with 354 hp (264 kW) 530 ft lbs of torque and a 5.4 L normally aspirated engine. I can rebuild that transmission to handle 1000 ft lbs of torque, for future use.

This is a good thread. I recently looked at this same comparrison this past spring \ summer. I test drove alot of S4 928s and one Euro S2 all were autos and the performance left me very disappointed, no offence to the 928 owners on here. I test drove 4 cars and the newest was an '87, with the lowest mileage car being 67K.

I felt like the interiors were falling apart and the fabric was lifting on several interior panels, I am sure part of the problem is lack of care by previous owners. Suprisingly it appears that 911 interiors wear better than the 928 from my experience.

I tried really hard to like the 928 because I think the cars are dead sexxy but every car I had to walk away from and was also concerned about being nickel and dimed by these cars.

I test drove the W210 E55 and was very impressed. 350hp and lots of torque from the 5.4L AMG V8. These cars are a perfect size between the too small C Class and the overly large S Class. You can pick-up a nice W210 E55 for less than $20K or Corolla money! These cars are very reliable and have some great features like Xenon lights, big brakes, air bags, Navigation (if spec'd), dual zone HVAC\ Climate Control the list goes on and on. The E55 is definitely much more modern and feels it compared to the 928s I drove, the E55 also handles extremely well, stops hard and accelerates with great gusto.

In terms of holding value I think both cars will both hold their value well.

The E55 is the daily fun driver.

The 928 is more the weekend, grab a Starbuxx and go for a blast car.

Good luck in which ever you decide.

In general older MB's up to 98 are built better than Porsches. The materials of construction for trim, rubber and interior hold up much better. Problem is that MB'sdon't offer the feedback or overall driving experience of a Porsche IMHO. Still great cars, just not sure if it's and apples to apples comparison.

Default I Pick it up Monday

Well,

I pulled the trigger and will be picking up a 2000 AMG E55 on Monday Dec 24. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to share your opinions. I found it interesting that many of you own both and I was surprised at how difficult the decision was for me. It's a nice seat heated ride and I'm pleased with the car as a whole (records, upkeep, options, etc). I do look forward to a 928 search in the future however I think that search will most likely be for a GT or GTS.

Thanks everyone and Happy Holidays!

Congrats Michael

Not sure if you're already a member of Mercedesshop Forum but there are some helpful people on there familiar with these cars. Certainly better than MBWorld. They also are a great source for parts.

Michael,

Congrats, great looking car.

Here is link to Mercedes Shop forum, http://www.mercedesshop.com/. Not quite as good as this forum, but still very good. I had an issue where the ABS, ESP and BAS alarms all came on same time and reset when car was shut down. Went on the forum and had an answer the next day - it was the brake light switch that caused it. On the 928 forum, I would have had the answer in less than 15 minutes.

The buy parts on the mercedesshop site is real good, they discount factory parts, fast shipping too.
