Post Some extra wires I found

Was regluing some loose upholstry this weekend so I had the sides of the space behind the radio. So, adhering strictly to the "if it ain't broke, you're not trying hard enough" philosophy, decided to pull the radio and see if everything was hooked up okay.

Well, that's still a mystery (now coated in a thin layer of my blood for anyone who comes after me) but I found a single red wire hanging down from right behind the locking button with a plastic cap on it. After some searching I located another unconnected red wire stemming from a thick brown wire (that itself was not connected to anything, but ended with a male connector and had a branch with a female connector). So, following stated philosophy, I connected the two red wires and closed everything up.

So, anyone have any idea what this is? My locking button never worked and still doesn't, and I don't notice any other changes. If I can get ahold of a digital camera, I'll open it up again and post a picture of what the hell this looks like--I'll have to get in anyway, in replacing the radio, I think something got stuck behind it so it sticks out, there's too much damn wiring back there.

Oops, thanks for pointing that out Randy

'84 Euro S, AT.

The button I mean is the one to lock the doors next to the central warning indicator (I was blanking on the word "console" before)

Obviously I'm going to need pictures of this, because even I don't understand what I'm describing.

Flint, could one of those wires be for the radio antenna amplifier?

Flint and Randy,
Flint same loose wires on Pattycakes - 82'Weissach Auto -.
When I take something apart My immediate area looks like a cross between a surgical instrument tray and Leonardo Di Vinci's sketch book. I am generally, meticulous.
1. Seats back
2, Carpets out
3. Battery disconnected.
4. Plastic scuff plate removed
5. Side carpet panels removed
Noted the tangle of wires but every thing 'seemed' connected.
Ash tray out/2 smallscrews, console panel trim out, Bamberg radio hardware removed, screws for O2 sensor/brake warning panel out, pulled O2 panel, removed heat/AC control head - removed same after eyeballing/mapping vac. lines and wires.
Eyeballed/mapped ash tray light/induction heater wires-removed. Mapped all heater/AC actuators tested all within reach. Upside down- mapped radio wiring and removed.
Removed Radio, tracked ant wire to ant. amp mapped and removed. Ziptied all associated wires together. THAT's when I noticed your (and my) Rouge wires Red off the brown and a splitter for the red one end male one end female.
I did the opposite ... Since I know I didn't pull them and I couldn't bring myself to force voltage back on itself ...I taped them off. Everything works including ant. Got me..
If the radio is sticking out.
1. The Radio is hanging up on the aft clip.
2. The slide tray is hung up... bend anything taking it out?
3. You are trying to push the console trim plate over something that should go on after the trim plate is on.
4. The radio is hanging up on some of the feed wires to that skinny O2 panel...my favorite. I know this didn't help much, but,
"YOU ARE NOT ALONE"
Later, Keep em' rolling.

Actually that's a lot of help, John. I think my wires were capped off initially (there were two little orange caps rolling arould loose). Taking up space for me was some kind of aftermarket "black wedge" is the only way to describe it that splits off all the speaker wires (probably because its a 4-channel system that got converted to 2). No idea what the setup is normally. But hopefully I'll get a chance this weekend to open 'er up and neaten things up a bit, clean off all the bloodstains...

Flint, '84 Euro-S, A/T (looking a little nicer every day)
