How much would it take to make YOUR 928 perfect.

See, I wanted to make my 80 perfect, but then I totalled up the cost, and went out and bought a perfect 85 for less money. The car literally needs nothing. This is an odd state of affairs, and I am having difficulty adjusting.
The 80, as is, makes a great beater, although I expect I will want a proper gearbox rebuild at some point, and painting the nose and tail. So much for saving money, which is why I continue to use it as my second truck.

See? it doesn't end.

A wax job would do it.

30-35k, that was the total on my restoration with the car extra of course... But that is soup to nuts.... but it IS PERFECT. Robert Budd is finishing the interior tonight as a matter of fact.

Perfect? I think that's unattainable. But then I don't want it to be perfect. If it were I'd never drive the damn thing.
I like that it has chips in the paint and few scratches.
I like that it drips a little oil every time I park it (although it better not after the engine is done).
I like that a couple things are cracked or have other been "modified."
Perfect? Far from it! And that's why I love it. I can take it anywhere and I don't worry about it. It's a beautiful thing.

My S4:
Re-do the brakes completely.
Re-do the vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, fix rad end tank. New tires. Tune up. Usual HVAC system items. Suspension - everything from bushings to shocks, springs, tie rods, cv joints, etc, etc, etc.
Basically every wear item on my S4 could stand to be refreshed. And an alignment.
You do the math.
Once that is all done, I'll likely sell it so I can buy a DE/track prepped 928, one with sunroof delete. Old boy with S4 running gear would be nice. Or a Euro S.
We'll see what's around in a year or two.
Will be fun.
Reminds me, I need to go on Craigslist to find an engine stand so I can start freshening things up.

It is tempting to change the exhaust and try to get a set of wide rear GT wheels for the front so I can run 245s, but I keep telling myself not to screw with it. The second owner had it for 18 years, kept it garaged, and had all the servicing done by the same mechanic at Holbert's for all those years.
If it aint broke ...

heater control valve, already purchased, just need to install.
trunk liner (leather) is warped, not sure how much it would cost to fix, but I doub't I'll ever tackle that one.
and thats it, everything else functions 100%

Uh, is purfect relative?
Have to admit that I'm on dialup and didn't read the whole thread...but after so many years with my fairly unmolested Euro, I would say that the factory could've invested another $5K or so to make sure it was perfect of the line! But then, build standards vary and particularly with marquee cars...I guess. Now? It's a darn nice representation of what it is, but I have no doubt that $20K would leave it short of 'perfect'.
(edit)..Of Course...that all depends on one's benchmark...perfect as-in from the factory pristine, or perfect as-in my car just as I want it, or what. My remarks assume factory pristine.
When I think of what I sank into my '67 Tri-power GTO years ago...and the parts were so much cheaper...and it was not too much older then, than my 928 now....and it still broke loose the tires at 30 mph when the outboard carbs were provoked....
