Default Tranny issues

I have a 87 s4 and i have been having issues with my tranny , from a standing start if i punch it down it seems like it pulls hard but will not shift into 3rd it just seems like it revs up but thats all if i shut the car off and restart it cures the problem ,it only happens when i jump on it any other time its fine. It also has been weird in the mornings when its cold it doesnt seem to want to drop into gear untill i rev it up .. I was given some advice to get the tranny flushed and a new filter. does anybody have any other ideas..

thanks in advance

Is this in "D" or "3" or "2"?

If you take it to redline in 2nd, does it jsut bounce off the rev limiter? Do you have any kind of kickdoen bypass?

Before any analysis can mean anything, you need to verify that your fluid level is OK.

No kick down switch , and the fluid level is fine.. runs fine when i dont jump on it but when i get on it it runs strong up to rev limit then doesnt shift into the next gear just revs up like a manual tranny that has a slipping clutch shut off the car and restart and it goes away .

Did you check the vacuum line to the modulator? Is the bowden cable correctly adjusted? How many miles are on the car?

I have a symptom very similar to this that only manifests itself on the few occasions I have had it past 140 or so. When I slow back down to a full stop and get going again it wont shift out of first. Then all I have to do is pull it over turn the car off and back on and it's fine again. Never happens except when coming back down from high speeds I shouldn't be at anyway but it still bothers me that it's there. I also dont have a kickdown switch and I'm at 79,000 mi. I'll do a search on these vacuum modulator/ bowden cable thingies and see if I can figure them out before I ask you to explain them.

I know its sometimes easier to just ask a question in the hopes that another person with more experience will pipe up.
What i found is that if i take some initiative and do a bit of research, I find that I am more informed when the correct answers do show up.
My suggestion is to use the search function first , this will give you more foundation information, and then you will have a better understanding of the solution
