More advice needed for Candleman and his 5-speed dreams
I suppose I should supply the following qualifying information to my previous rather patience testing appeals for advise on the 87 5-speed that I have been wetting my pants over (oh and as if you haven't)... I am totally in love with my 89 S4 auto and it is hard to imagine selling it for any reason bar maybe a GT or GTS 5-speed selling for what I got mine for (ain't gonna happen), and the only thing better than having a 928 is having two of them. But here's the crux of the situation: I have a solid line on this veeery nice 87 5-speed for 14k. I could buy it and drive victoriously through the city streets with flowers raining down from above heralding my arrival into 'Multiple 928 Owners' club, or I could wait patiently watching and waiting (and I can be very patient) until one day there comes along an 89-91 GT with records and low mileage for around $15k... I don't know what to do, I am usually an advocate of the philosophy that says "wait patiently, don't settle for second best and you will eventually find exactly what you are looking for". What I want to know from longtime members of this forum is, based on your experience, have you seen 5-speed S4s/GT's come up for sale by members here that are comparably priced and in comparable condition to the one I am thinking of buying, and can you confidently tell me that if I am patient I will find a better car (a GT) for 14k or less?
"we can wait a lifetime and never get what we want but we can get something close to it now"... Discuss....

No way will you ever find a GT with <50K miles for $14K unless it's a salvage title. I don't recall how many miles Andrew's 91GT had on it, but he got it for ~15K and it had bad head gaskets.... I paid 17.5K for my '90 with 108K miles on it and have spent nearly as much getting it back to 1- condition. I really don't think you're going to do much better than that '87 in that condition with those miles for $14K. But hey, if you want a GT or a GTS, wait it out. IMO, though, there's no such thing as a nice 15K GT, the nice ones start at $22-24K (purchase price + what it takes to make it 'nice'....)
Of course there's always the guy who has a stroke and his wife parts out his collection for peanuts, but don't hold yer breath.

You could...." or I could wait patiently watching and waiting (and I can be very patient) until one day there comes along an 89-91 GT with records and low mileage for around $15k.." only to have Todd "Lowmiler" buy it before you pulled the trigger. The clearly underpriced under marketed cars get snapped up and usually resold....

If you're in the right place at the right time, you might find a killer deal, but probably not on a GT or GTS. They do happen every now and then. But ... if you see someone else with a big smile on their face driving around town in this car, are you going to kick yourself for not buying it? If so, buy it. If seeing someone else driving "your" prize isn't going to bother you and you don't really need another car, wait. Sometimes looking for the prize is as much fun as owning it. You seem to think that buying this car would be settling for second best. If you buy it anyway you run the risk of winding up like I did not too long ago ... with five 928s, a 993, and a corvette. You need to take control of the disease and realize you can't own them all. I think expecting to find a low mileage GT or GTS for $15k ain't gonna happen any time soon though.

I read something like this from the old rennlist ...."I have a ’87 928S4 (manual transmission) with 144,000 miles (I have owned the car since 1989, maintained by Don Galbraith Motoring and myself- about US$81,000 in maintenance and repairs since acquiring the car - everything is stock). Having a bit of a problem, ....." And have to wonder why anyone would buy what they do not really want and what difference a couple thousand makes on the purchase price ?? The cars are almost FREE the depreciation based on age is none existent it is now condition wear, tear, miles and how it is marketed. Obsessing on the purchase price makes little sense to me ! The reference to "Danglerb" is not a compliment but refers to "thinking" outside the box , excessive analysis, and polling others opinions about personal decisions.

Buy the '87 and if a GT comes along at a price you can afford buy it as well.
Then afterward you can sell whatever you least like or keep all 3 or buy more.
Just make a decision.

Personally I think you're lucky you've found a low mileage 87 5spd in good condition which has checked out mechanically. I would never sell mine for that price, wouldn't even have a nightmare about it!
Personally I'm not certain if a GT is worth waiting for in comparison to a nice condition S4 5spd.

If you wait patiently you will "eventually" find a nice GT for under $15k. Even under $10k "eventually". If you like your S4, have you consider Supercharging it? You may not even care to look at a GT anymore. all that abundance of power available each time you press the gas, no need to change gears, no need to upgrade clutch, hmmm.

To be frank about it no one NEEDS a 928. We simply want them . Want is an emotion a state of mind which has NOTHING to do with logic or reason. At best you can rationalize the choice but that is about it A way to support doing what we wanted to do all along.

Here is my advice, if your heart is set on getting a GT then don't buy another S4 even if it a 5-speed. You won't be happy until you get a GT/GTS if that is truly your dream car. My advice take the S4 you have and fix the issues it has (Door handle, Vibration). Take the chance to learn while you fix, and that will help make a better choice when looking for a GT/GTS. PM me your phone # again (Lost my cell phone Tuesday) and i will get with you on checking the Timing Belt tension and Crankshaft endplay. You need to order the Converter gaskets first as they will need to be replaced when the exhaust is dropped down. Also when you find that $14,000 GT/GTS don't post asking if you should buy it here, i bet it will be gone before the first response.

I have $15k burning a hole just ready to pull the trigger on one of those, so when you see one, PLEASE let me know asap.
Then, after I secure my nice GT, I'll sell my S4 to recover some of my funds.

I got mine for $15k with 123k on the clock 2 years ago and it has cost me about an additional $8k to get it up to snuff (excl. SCer). The only reason I got it for that price was that the guy messed up his ebay ad and listed it as an S4 with an auto.

Try this one out. Its not $15k, but at $18,900 (asking price) its close. I know nothing about this car. I just found it on autotrader.com.
