Default 1986 928S specs?

Hello all

Not being a 928 guy I did have some questions. I have been doing some search and I am trying to confirm what the Horsepower of a stock 928S was (is). So far I have come up with is, the 85 and 86 cars got a displacement increase in 85 and that upped the horsepower from 238 HP to 288 hp. I am guessing that is break HP? Also what is the parasitic drag through the drive train for the 928? is it 15% like the 944?

Thanks,

IPSC

Something like that for a 5sp, and about 18-20% for an auto depending on who you ask. Most '85-86 auto will dyno between 250-260 rwhp. One of mine (5sp) dynoed out at 281 rwhp with just a set of chips.

Just as Shane said, a set of chips (clones are around $40-$75 on ebay) will give at least another 25hp.

I weighed mine with all my travel goodies in the car with me @ 3600lbs.

3400 lbs net weight minus driver.

Are you trying to compare it to the 951? They are two totally differnet cars and you really need to drive it (preferably a 5-speed) to get a good feel for one.

Yep that is exactly what I am doing. How pronounced are the differences and what are they? I won't have a chance to drive one for a while and I am curious.

Somebody posted data a few years ago that the 5-speed is a little under 10% and the auto is 15%. I think the auto number came from Mercedes.

The usual 15% for manual and 20% for auto comes from Mustangs/Camaros which are probably the most dynoed cars around. I guess if your car can't turn, you need something to do when not at the drag strip.

You'llbe most impresed with the low end torque of the V8. The car will feel somewhat heavier but being larger, it will have a lot more interrior room too. Breaking probably feels the same or close to it. You really have to drive one for at least a good 30min- an hour.

Don't forget the glorious exhaust note on the 928 as a difference.

The v8 sounds like a 60's muscle car built by perfectionists, while the i4 is more nicely-tuned-import-with-bigger-*****.

Low End Torque... What is that? I hate turbo lag but I love when it kicks in.

thanks for the help guys,

951-928 are both very nice Porsches...but with an entirely different feel-driving dynamic...... The 85-86 (which is also called 86.5) are rated at 288hp 302 torque stock....and they gain ALOT just from chips....they tend to dyno very high with chips....over 270whp is common in a 3400lb car

The 85-86 (which is also called 86.5)
Brian didn't point it out, but just to clarify a key discernment for the MY's you referenced - 85 & 86 are the same up to 86 vin ending "0999". 86 vin ending "1000"+ is referenced as 86.5 (86 1/2), due to the addition of larger brakes with ABS from the soon-to-be-released S4 model for 87. This is the main reason for favoring the 86.5 MY, although the non-S4 brakes ("S" brakes) of 85 & 86 are still acceptable.
